Nijmegen was founded in the 1st century B.C. as a Roman military camp, and is the second oldest city in the Netherlands. Ulpia Noviomagus was the first town in what is now the Netherlands to receive Roman city rights (the designation of “municipium”) around 100 A.D. from the emperor Trajan. After it received the designation, Ulpia Noviomagus began a program of erecting public buildings, including this
The bathhouse was found at a site along the Waal river slated for residential construction. The preventative archaeology excavation found the outlines of entire city blocks of the Roman city, with houses, luxury townhomes, paved streets and a military tower. Thousands of portable artifacts were discovered, from jewelry and coins to a small bronze bust of the god Bacchus.
The bath complex reflects the prosperity of the city. The construction materials are luxurious. The walls were clad in marble and the floor tiled with black and white limestone. Remains of painted plaster walls were found in some of the rooms, and decorative architectural features from the façade were also discovered. Columns and limestone and sandstone adorned the interior of the buildings.

Excavations began in September of last year and will continue through July of this year. The discovery of the bathhouse remains will not stop the construction of the new housing, but developers plan to integrate the finds into a new design so that they remain visible. Any remains and artifacts that can be recovered will be. A selection of them will go on display at Nijmegen City Hall on June 29th.

No other Corded Ware kiln pits have ever been found with a person buried inside, although occasionally the remains of cattle or dogs have been found. The animal deposits are believed to have sacrificial offerings. It’s possible this individual may have been sacrificed, but there are other possible explanations. He could have been murdered and fell into the pit, for example, or buried there hastily after dying in battle.

One of the oldest finds is a tumulus from the Baalberge Culture ca. 4000-3400 B.C.) that was an estimated 15 meters (49 feet) high originally. It was built over a wooden burial chamber of an elite member of the community. A ceremonial precinct defined by a triple rampart and ditch enclosure from the Salzmünde Culture (ca. 3400-3100 B.C.) was also discovered at the site. The ritual ceremonies that took place were complex and large-scale. Twelve pits were discovered within the ramparts. They contained the remains of burned houses and offerings.
One pit held two intact ceramic vessels believed to have been offerings. Another contained weathered canine bones in their anatomical positions but bearing traces of fire. A human skull was found next to the dog bones, but it was not weathered, indicating the pit was kept open during ceremonies that took place over a long period of time, or that the dog bones were kept elsewhere for a long time, then moved and recomposed in an anatomically accurate way. After the deposits, the pits were filled with the rubble of burned houses.

The Salzmünde Culture predates the Corded Ware by at least 500 years, so it’s not likely they were performing the same rituals. LDA Saxony-Anhalt scientists will examine the remains in the Corded Ware kiln in the hope that laboratory analysis will shed light on the mysterious burial.

The bookmark is 10 inches long and has a circle mounted to it about 1.5 inches in diameter that was created from two parchment discs. A strip of parchment threaded through a loop attached to the circle served as the long part of the bookmark that would have been tucked between the pages.
Both sides of the disc have Arabic numerals 1 through 4 written on them, with the four being an early looped form. The disc can be turned between two semicircular folded pieces of parchment which cover three figures at a time leaving the last remaining one visible. One side of the parchment semicircle is painted with symbols of sun, moon and stars. The other side has only a sun with the inscription “Rota versatil[is]” written in a cursive script.

There is no evidence of where this bookmark was made or who used it. Its first documented owner was Newcastle-upon-Tyne shipowner and book collector Alfred Brewis in the early 20th century. It has remained in his family by descent until the sale. The pre-sale estimate £800-1200 ($1073-1610). It sold for £7,000 ($9390).

An 11th century sword has been discovered in the Warta River in Wronki, Poland, by fisherman. There is no way to know how the sword ended up in the river — lost by accident during combat, deliberately deposited for ritual purposes — but there was a medieval stronghold less than 2.5 miles from Wronki, which could be connected to the find.
Resident Mirosław Tucholski was setting up his fishing gear at his usual spot over a bend in the river when he spotted a piece of metal on one of the headlands (stone and earth fortifications). It was partially hidden in the sand and stones, exposed only by a drop of the water level.

A preliminary dating to the 11th century points to the era of the early Piast dynasty. Greater Poland was experiencing significant changes: the coronation of Bolesław the Brave in 1025 was followed by a crisis of the monarchy, the invasion of Bretislaus, and the reconstruction of power structures under Casimir the Restorer. This doesn’t mean that the Wronki sword can be linked to any of these events, but it does indicate that the artifact may date from an era when weapons were not only a weapon of war but also a clear sign of social standing.
As no datable objects or remains were found where the sword was found, archaeologists used comparative dating, comparing the shape of the blade, guard, tang, pommel and fuller to determine the type of sword.
The blade is approximately 76 cm long, the tang approximately 9 cm, the crossguard approximately 12.5 cm wide, and the blade tapers from almost 5.5 cm at the base to about 2.5 cm in the section closest to the point, although corrosion may have affected these values. With a type 3 crossguard and a potential type B pommel according to R. E. Oakeshott, it can tentatively be considered a form close to early one-handed swords bordering on types X-XI, or possibly transitional to type XII . Therefore, the 11th century is a good suggestion, but final clarification of the type and chronology will only occur after conservation and a complete study of the object.
The sword needs careful handling to keep it from rapidly deteriorating now that it has been removed from the safety of the water. It will be X-rayed for cracks or marks hidden by the thick layer of corrosion, and subjected to metallurgical analysis to determine the composition of the blade and other components.

Researchers will carry out further surface studies and laboratory analyses before making a definitive dating of the cave. The team plans to document the painted surfaces in detail, classify the figures, create inventory records and examine pigment samples to better understand the cave’s chronology and painting techniques.

The helmets were discovered off the coast of Benicarló, eastern Spain, at the underwater site of Piedras de la Barbada. Fishermen had captured two large masses of metal and marine concretions that turned out to be stacked helmets, fused together by corrosion materials, sediment and marine debris. They were thought to be Roman because the site is rich with Roman material, including amphorae, anchors and Punic War-era bronze helmets.
The two concreted block were conserved and archaeologists counted at least 43 helmets in the two assemblages. (The figure comes from the helmets that can be counted on the surface of the two groups. There are probably more encased in the center of the blocks.) Two of them were separated from the blocks and placed on display at the Museo de la Ciudad de Benicarló. The original blocks and fragments that came off of them are kept in the Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló.

The dating revealed that these helmets were examples of a transitional style that was briefly trendy but that made no long-term on armor fashions.
Specialists believe that all the pieces formed a single shipment when they hit the seabed. The most probable hypothesis is that the batch was packed and transported by sea when an incident occurred during loading or unloading operations. The cache was found at a depth of just six metres, right next to an area used as a jetty.
Dr Graells suggested that a portion of the cargo became trapped under the sand and could not be recovered at the time. This accidental mishap allowed the package to remain hidden for centuries, safely buried out of sight.
The exceptional preservation of the helmets was achieved through the combined action of marine concretions and sediment. In some specimens, these deposits sealed the fabrics lining the interior, creating stable micro-environments that protected organic materials that would normally decay. These very textile fragments proved fundamental to reconstructing the history of the hoard.
The researchers place the sinking during a particularly turbulent period for the western Mediterranean. The expansion of Islamic piracy along the Valencian coast during the mid-14th century, alongside the growing militarisation of the coastline, generated a high demand for defensive equipment. In this context, the cargo may have been destined for local militias, troops of the Kingdom of Valencia, or armed companies tasked with protecting the maritime frontier.
The findings have been published in the journal Antiquity and can be read in its entirety here.
