Two rare Anglo-Saxon Agnus Dei coins found in Denmark

Two rare Late Anglo-Saxon coins have been found by metal detectorists in Denmark, one near Løgumkloster and one at Kåstrup in Thy. They were discovered as part of routine archaeological surveys in Jutland performed by volunteers in collaboration with Danish cultural heritage authorities and have now entered the collections of the National Museum of Denmark.

There are fewer than 30 examples of the English Agnus Dei type coin minted around 1009 by King Æthelred the Unready in the hope that God would express his approval of his iconography on the coinage by helping England’s fight against the Viking invaders. The fact that majority of the Agnus Dei coins known have been found in Scandinavia suggests the petition was rejected.

The coins differ significantly from contemporary English coins, which bear the portrait of the king and a cross on the reverse. The Lamb of God coins, on the other hand, are marked on one side with a lamb pierced by a cross – a Christian symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The lamb stands on a tablet with the Greek letters alpha and omega, symbolizing that God is the beginning and end of all. On the other side of the coin is the ascending dove of the Holy Spirit.

After more than 150 years of constant attacks, England had a generation of relief from Viking invaders under the reigns of Æthelred’s uncle Eadwig (r. 955-959) and father Edgar (959-975). Edgar had been a strong supporter of the monasteries, giving them large grants and forcing lay landowners to give them their land. When Æthelred ascended the throne in 978, he was a child, no more than 12 years old, but when he reached his majority, he dismissed his regents and changed course, chipping away at ecclesiastical privilege and property, giving church lands to his supporters.

But the Vikings came back. Small raids in the 980s led to a major attack on Ipswich in 991 and an invading force that defeated English defenders over and over. Æthelred had to buy them off with tribute, but they returned in 993, and the king had to pay an even bigger price for a (temporary) cessation of hostilities. The Danish fleet returned in 997, and this time there was no tribute sufficient to stop the raids. He was so desperate after five years of attacks that Æthelred ordered the massacre of all Danish men in England on St. Brice’s Day (November 13, 1002). It didn’t help. When the largest army yet, led by Thorkell the Tall, landed in Sandwich in 1009, the English defenses were routed. Cities paid their own tributes to get out of the line of fire, and in 1011, England paid a massive tribute of 48,000 pounds to free Canterbury and the captured Archbishop (he was killed anyway).

Seeing the return of so much death and destruction at Viking hands as retribution for his sins, Æthelred repented of the anti-church actions of his early reign. He restored the lands and privileges he had removed, and in the 980s began minting coins featuring religious images (the hand of God, crosses) instead of his stylized portraiture. The Agnus Dei type, portraying the Lamb of God with a cross on the obverse and the dove of the Holy Spirit on the reverse, was minted in 1009 in response to Thorkell the Tall’s invasion.

The Vikings loved the religious coin types. Instead of invoking God’s favor and protection to repel Viking attacks, these types of coins ended up being highly sought after by the invading armies. They appear in Scandinavian hoards in large amounts, often pierced to be were worn as pendants. The plunder and tribute extracted from England had a powerful effect on the currency system in Denmark.

“The Danish mint is inspired and based on the well-ordered English coinage system. The Vikings quickly discovered that it was much smarter to use coins than to cut silver into pieces when trading,” says [National Museum curator] Gitte Tarnow Ingvardson.

Even the Lamb of God coins were imitated here at home. The Viking kings Canute the Great and his son Hardeknud minted coins with the same two motifs, as did Sweyn Estridsen, who ended up playing an important role in the establishment of the Danish church organization.

The two Agnus Dei coins are now being cleaned and conserved. They will be studied further and subjected to scientific analysis to find out more information about their origins in England and deposition in Jutland.

30 अप्रैल 2020 आज से 6 साल पहले सुबह खबर आई कि ऋषि कपूर अब नहीं रहे। कुछ दिन पहले तक वो गंभीर हालत होने के बावजूद हॉस्पिटल स्टाफ को हंसाते तो कभी गाना सुना रहे थे। दैनिक भास्कर से बात करते हुए ऋषि कपूर की इकलौती बेटी रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘सब अचानक हुआ, वो बहुत डरावना दिन था। अचानक एक खालीपन आ गया। एक सूनापन, उनकी जिंदगी उनकी मौजूदगी लार्जर देन लाइफ थी।’ ऋषि कपूर 3 साल के थे, जब वो पिता राज कपूर की फिल्म ‘श्री 420’ में चॉकलेट की लालच में नजर आए। तब से उनका सिनेमा से ऐसा रिश्ता जुड़ा, जो ताउम्र कायम रहा। 1973 की फिल्म ‘बॉबी’ से फिल्मों में आए ऋषि कपूर उर्फ चिंटू ने ‘रफूचक्कर’, ‘कर्ज’, ‘प्रेम रोग’, ‘चांदनी’ जैसी बेहतरीन फिल्में कीं। बढ़ती उम्र के साथ उन्होंने ‘अग्निपथ’, ‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर’, ‘कपूर एंड संस’, ‘नमस्ते लंदन’, 102 नॉट आउट जैसी फिल्में कीं। रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘उनमें सिनेमा के लिए जुनून था। बहुत पैशनेट थे। हम उनकी फिल्मों के सेट पर जाते थे। वो एक कोने में किरदार की तैयारी करते थे।’ जब हमने रिद्धिमा से पूछा कि उन्हें कब पता चला कि उनके पिता इतने बड़े स्टार हैं, तो जवाब में हंसते हुए उन्होंने कहा- ‘स्कूल में। जब टीचर हमें कहती थी कि हमने कल आपके पापा की फिल्म देखी, बड़ा मजा आया। फ्रेंड्स भी बोलते थे कि तुम्हारे पापा और मम्मा कितने फेमस हैं। जब हम खाने बाहर जाते थे तो भी इतने सारे लोग आकर ऑटोग्राफ लेते थे। तो हम सोचते थे कि इतनी सारी भीड़ क्यों इकट्ठा हो रही है? हम पूछते थे कि आप क्या लिख रहे हो, तो वो समझाते थे, हम एक्टर हैं, क्योंकि हम फिल्म में काम करते हैं।’ रिद्धिमा कहती हैं कि ऋषि कपूर भले ही एक स्टार थे, लेकिन परिवार के लिए वो एक बेहतरीन फैमिली मैन थे, जिनके लिए प्रायोरिटी हमेशा परिवार था। रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘वो हमें बहुत वेकेशन पर ले जाते थे, जब शूटिंग करते थे, तो हमारी समर वेकेशन ऐसे प्लान करते थे कि काम भी हो जाए और घूम भी सकें। जो करते थे हमारे अराउंड करते थे। वो हमें सबसे पहले तवज्जो देते थे। उन्होंने परिवार को हमेशा प्रायोरिटी दी।’ ‘हमारी शनिवार को छुट्टी होती थी, वो शाम को बिजी रहते थे, तो हमें दिन में लंच पर ले जाते थे। उन्होंने एक गेम भी बनाया था, रेपिड फायर जैसा। कार में वो आगे और मैं, रणबीर, मम्मा पीछे बैठते थे। वो जल्दी-जल्दी 10 सवाल पूछते थे, सही जवाब देने वाले को ट्रीट मिलती थी।’ ऋषि कपूर का अचानक दुनिया से रुख्सत होना, परिवार के लिए जोरदार धक्का था। इस पर रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘बहुत खालीपन महसूस होता है। इतना कि बता नहीं सकती। वो टाइम बहुत खराब था। मैं मम्मी (नीतू सिंह) के साथ थी। मेरी, रणबीर, आलिया की पहली प्रायोरिटी थी कि मम्मी ठीक हों। हम उनको बिजी रखते थे कि कैसे भी उन्हें बाहर ले जाना है, उन्हें डिस्ट्रैक्ट करना है, क्योंकि ये बहुत अचानक हुआ था। मैं एक्सप्रेस नहीं कर सकती। वो बहुत डरावनी फीलिंग थी। बहुत खालीपन हो गया। बहुत सूनापन। मैं आज भी कभी उन्हें पास्ट टेंस में रिफर नहीं कर पाती। मैं हमेशा बोलती हूं कि वो अभी हैं, हमें गाइड कर रहे हैं, हमें प्यार कर रहे हैं, आशीर्वाद दे रहे हैं।’ ‘मैं उनसे कई बातें करना चाहती हूं। मुझे कहना है कि हम सब आपको बहुत सेलिब्रेट करते हैं पापा। हम हर रोज फैमिली वीडियो कॉल पर आपकी बातें करते हैं कि अगर आप होते तो क्या बोलते, क्या करते। आज तक एक दिन भी ऐसा नहीं गया, जब आपकी बात न हो।’ बेटी रिद्धिमा के मुताबिक, पिता ऋषि कपूर लार्जर देन लाइफ जिंदगी जीते थे। इसका परिणाम वो किस्से हैं, जो उनकी बेबाकी, हाजिरजवाबी, गुस्से और मजेदार व्यक्तित्व को दर्शाते हैं। कभी उन्होंने अमिताभ को दिया जा रहा अवॉर्ड खरीदकर अपने नाम किया, तो कभी सलमान खान के पिता की धमकी का जवाब दिया। डिंपल कपाड़िया से अफेयर भी चर्चा में रहा और अंडरवर्ल्ड डॉन दाऊद इब्राहिम से हुई उनकी मुलाकात भी विवाद की वजह बनी। डेथ एनिवर्सरी के मौके पर ऋषि कपूर की जिंदगी से जुड़े कुछ बेहतरीन किस्से भी पढ़िए- किस्सा-1, चॉकलेट की लालच में 3 साल के ऋषि कपूर ने की एक्टिंग 4 सितंबर 1952 बॉम्बे के मटुंगा स्थित राज कपूर बंगलो में कृष्णा कपूर ने बेटे ऋषि को जन्म दिया। वो तीन भाइयों में मंझले थे। रणधीर कपूर (करीना-करिश्मा के पिता) बड़े थे और राजीव कपूर (छोटे)। पिता राज कपूर शोमैन थे। ऋषि महज 3 साल के थे, जब पिता राज कपूर, नरगिस के साथ श्री 420 बना रहे थे। फिल्म के मशहूर गाने प्यार हुआ इकरार हुआ में जब राज कपूर को चाइल्ड आर्टिस्ट की जरूरत पड़ी, तो वो अपने बच्चों को सेट पर ले आए। गहरी आंखें और चबी गाल वाले ऋषि हर किसी का ध्यान खींच लिया करते थे। सेट पर उन्हें दूसरे बच्चों के साथ बारिश में भीगना था, लेकिन नाजुक चिंटू जी के ऊपर जैसे ही बूंदें गिरतीं, वो रोना शुरू कर देते। कई बार शॉट खराब हुए और रील्स बर्बाद होने लगीं। तब नरगिस धीरे से उनके पास आईं और कहा, अगर वो बिना रोए शॉट पूरा करते हैं, तो वो उन्हें ढेर सारी चॉकलेट देंगी। थे। सारे बच्चे मधुबाला की खूबसूरती देख रहे थे, लेकिन ऋषि कपूर की नजरें दिलीप कुमार पर टिकी थीं। किस्सा- 3, राज कपूर ने सिगरेट पीते देख कर दी पिटाई करीब 15 साल की उम्र में दोस्तों की वजह से ऋषि कपूर को सिगरेट पीने की लत लग गई। वो मुंबई के चैंपियन स्कूल के बाहर कोकाकोला स्टैंड की दुकान से अहमद नाम के दुकानदार से सिगरेट लिया करते थे। एक समय में दुकान में उनकी 300 रुपए उधारी हो गई। एक दिन गुस्से में अहमद से कहा कि अगर उधारी नहीं चुकाई, तो वो राज कपूर को बता देंगे। एक दिन ऋषि कपूर पिता के मेकअप मैन के साथ सिगरेट के कश लगा रहे थे, तभी राज कपूर पहुंच गए। रंगे हाथों पकड़े जाने के बाद राज कपूर ने ऋषि कपूर को खूब पीटा। बता दें कि स्टार बनने के बाद ऋषि कपूर 300 रुपए उधार चुकाने गए थे, लेकिन तब अहमद ने पैसे नहीं लिए और उन्हें बस गले लगा लिया। किस्सा-4, डिंपल कपाड़िया को दी, गर्लफ्रेंड की दी हुई अंगूठी ऋषि कपूर को स्कूल के दिनों में पारसी यास्मीन नाम की लड़की से पहला प्यार हुआ। उन्होंने ही बॉबी से डेब्यू करने वाले ऋषि कपूर को वजन घटाने में मदद की थी। एक दिन यास्मीन ने ऋषि को एक अंगूठी गिफ्ट गर्लफ्रेंड यास्मीन ने उनसे ब्रेकअप कर लिया। डिंपल कपाड़िया और ऋषि की डेब्यू फिल्म बॉबी (1973) सुपरहिट रही थी। लेकिन फिर डिंपल ने राजेश खन्ना से शादी कर फिल्मों से ब्रेक ले लिया। किस्सा-5, पैसे देकर खरीदा पहला अवॉर्ड, अमिताभ से हुई अनबन फिल्म बॉबी (1973) के लिए ऋषि कपूर को फिल्मफेयर बेस्ट एक्टर अवॉर्ड मिला था। उस साल ऋषि के अलावा अमिताभ बच्चन भी फिल्म जंजीर के लिए नॉमिनेटेड थे। हर तरफ चर्चा थी कि अवॉर्ड अमिताभ को ही मिलेगा, लेकिन ऋषि कपूर ने 30 हजार रुपए में वो अवॉर्ड खरीद लिया। ऐसा उन्होंने पीआरओ तारकनाथ गांधी और अपने सेक्रेटरी घनश्याम के कहने पर लिया। जैसे ही अमिताभ बच्चन को पता चला कि ऋषि ने अवॉर्ड खरीदा है तो दोनों के बीच कोल्डवॉर छिड़ गई। ऋषि कपूर ने अपनी ऑटोबायोग्राफी खुल्लम-खुल्ला में लिखा कि उन्हें अवॉर्ड खरीदने का पछतावा था और शर्म थी। इसके बाद अमिताभ बच्चन उनसे नाराज हो गए थे। किस्सा- 6, फ्यूचर वाइफ नीतू सिंह से लगवाते थे एक्स गर्लफ्रेंड यास्मीन को कॉल, होटल में देख दिल टूटा ऋषि कपूर यास्मीन से रिश्ता बरकरार रखना चाहते थे। फिल्म जहरीला इंसान की शूटिंग के समय ऋषि, को-स्टार और दोस्त नीतू सिंह ने यास्मीन को कॉल लगवाते थे, लेकिन जवाब नहीं मिलता था। एक दिन ऋषि ताज होटल में थे, तभी उन्हें यास्मीन दिखीं, जो वहां, ऋषि के ही एक पुराने दोस्त के साथ आई थीं। ये देख ऋषि कपूर का दिल टूट गया। 2 हजार लेकर पहुंचे ऋषि कपूर ने 18 हजार रुपए की शराब पी ली। बाद में उनका मैनेजर से खूब झगड़ा हुआ। किस्सा-7, सलीम-जावेद ने दी थी करियर तबाह करने की धमकी, जवाब में कहा- करके दिखाओ जंजीर, शोले लिखने वाले सलीम-जावेद का 80 के दशक में बड़ा नाम था। हर कोई उनकी लिखी फिल्म करना चाहता था। एक बार राइटर जोड़ी ने ऋषि कपूर को फिल्म ऑफर की, जो उन्होंने ठुकरा दी। सलीम-जावेद इससे चिढ़ गए। एक दिन उनकी मुलाकात प्लेमेट क्लब में हुई। सलीम खान (सलमान के पिता) ने ऋषि को देखते ही कहा- तुम्हारी हिम्मत कैसे हुई हमारी फिल्म ठुकराने की। जवाब मिला- मुझे फिल्म पसंद नहीं आई। सलीम ने गुस्से में कहा- तुम जानते नहीं हो क्या कि इंडस्ट्री में आजतक हमें किसी ने इनकार नहीं किया। हम तुम्हारा करियर तबाह कर सकते हैं। ये सुनकर ऋषि कपूर ने कहा- आप मुझे बर्बाद करने के लिए क्या कर सकते हैं। सलीम ने कहा- तुम्हारे साथ कौन काम करेगा, क्या तुम जानते हो, हमने राजेश खन्ना को जंजीर ऑफर की थी, लेकिन उन्होंने फिल्म करने से इनकार किया था। हमने उनके साथ कुछ नहीं किया, बस उनकी जगह अमिताभ को ले आए, जिन्होंने उन्हें बर्बाद कर दिया। हम तुम्हारे साथ भी यही करेंगे। इस पर ऋषि कपूर ने कहा- गो अहेड (आगे बढ़ो) और मुझे बर्बाद करके दिखाओ। किस्सा-8ः दाऊद इब्राहिम ने कॉल कर चाय पर किया इनवाइट साल 1988 में ऋषि कपूर दोस्त बिट्टू आनंद के साथ आशा भोसले का प्रोग्राम अटेंड करने दुबई गए थे। एयरपोर्ट पर अचानक एक शख्स उनके पास आया और उन्हें मोबाइल थमाते हुए कहा, दाऊद साहब बात करेंगे। दाऊद ने कॉल पर कहा- किसी भी चीज की जरूरत हो तो बस मुझे बता देना। ये सुनकर ऋषि कपूर डर गए। कुछ समय बाद दाऊद इब्राहिम के राइट हैंड ने उनसे कहा कि दाऊद आपके साथ चाय पीना चाहते हैं। ऋषि कपूर इनकार नहीं कर सके। उसी शाम उनके होटल में एक रोल्स रॉय आई, जो उन्हें एक अनजान जगह ले गया। दाऊद ने ऋषि से मुलाकात की और कहा- मैं ड्रिंक नहीं करता इसलिए आपको चाय पर बुलाया। ये मुलाकात 4 घंटे चली। किस्सा- 9, नीतू के लिए गिफ्ट की जगह ले आए कुत्ते के बिस्कुट ऋषि कपूर ने 13 फिल्मों में को-स्टार रहीं नीतू सिंह से 1970 में शादी की थी। इस शादी से कपल को दो बच्चे बेटा रणबीर कपूर और बेटी रिद्धिमा कपूर हुई। एक बार ऋषि कपूर अमेरिका गए, तो नीतू सिंह ने फरमाइश कर कई चीजों की स्क्रिप्ट नरेशन देना चाहते हैं। वो बिजी थे, तो डायरेक्टर ने कि पैकअप के बाद जब आप घर निकलो, तो मैं रास्ते में मेकअप वैन में ही सुना दूंगा। वो मान गए। मेकअप वैन में ऋषि कपूर हमेशा, पीछे की तरफ कमरे में 30 अप्रैल 2020 आज से 6 साल पहले सुबह खबर आई कि ऋषि कपूर अब नहीं रहे। कुछ दिन पहले तक वो गंभीर हालत होने के बावजूद हॉस्पिटल स्टाफ को हंसाते तो कभी गाना सुना रहे थे। दैनिक भास्कर से बात करते हुए ऋषि कपूर की इकलौती बेटी रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘सब अचानक हुआ, वो बहुत डरावना दिन था। अचानक एक खालीपन आ गया। एक सूनापन, उनकी जिंदगी उनकी मौजूदगी लार्जर देन लाइफ थी।’ ऋषि कपूर 3 साल के थे, जब वो पिता राज कपूर की फिल्म ‘श्री 420’ में चॉकलेट की लालच में नजर आए। तब से उनका सिनेमा से ऐसा रिश्ता जुड़ा, जो ताउम्र कायम रहा। 1973 की फिल्म ‘बॉबी’ से फिल्मों में आए ऋषि कपूर उर्फ चिंटू ने ‘रफूचक्कर’, ‘कर्ज’, ‘प्रेम रोग’, ‘चांदनी’ जैसी बेहतरीन फिल्में कीं। बढ़ती उम्र के साथ उन्होंने ‘अग्निपथ’, ‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर’, ‘कपूर एंड संस’, ‘नमस्ते लंदन’, 102 नॉट आउट जैसी फिल्में कीं। रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘उनमें सिनेमा के लिए जुनून था। बहुत पैशनेट थे। हम उनकी फिल्मों के सेट पर जाते थे। वो एक कोने में किरदार की तैयारी करते थे।’ जब हमने रिद्धिमा से पूछा कि उन्हें कब पता चला कि उनके पिता इतने बड़े स्टार हैं, तो जवाब में हंसते हुए उन्होंने कहा- ‘स्कूल में। जब टीचर हमें कहती थी कि हमने कल आपके पापा की फिल्म देखी, बड़ा मजा आया। फ्रेंड्स भी बोलते थे कि तुम्हारे पापा और मम्मा कितने फेमस हैं। जब हम खाने बाहर जाते थे तो भी इतने सारे लोग आकर ऑटोग्राफ लेते थे। तो हम सोचते थे कि इतनी सारी भीड़ क्यों इकट्ठा हो रही है? हम पूछते थे कि आप क्या लिख रहे हो, तो वो समझाते थे, हम एक्टर हैं, क्योंकि हम फिल्म में काम करते हैं।’ रिद्धिमा कहती हैं कि ऋषि कपूर भले ही एक स्टार थे, लेकिन परिवार के लिए वो एक बेहतरीन फैमिली मैन थे, जिनके लिए प्रायोरिटी हमेशा परिवार था। रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘वो हमें बहुत वेकेशन पर ले जाते थे, जब शूटिंग करते थे, तो हमारी समर वेकेशन ऐसे प्लान करते थे कि काम भी हो जाए और घूम भी सकें। जो करते थे हमारे अराउंड करते थे। वो हमें सबसे पहले तवज्जो देते थे। उन्होंने परिवार को हमेशा प्रायोरिटी दी।’ ‘हमारी शनिवार को छुट्टी होती थी, वो शाम को बिजी रहते थे, तो हमें दिन में लंच पर ले जाते थे। उन्होंने एक गेम भी बनाया था, रेपिड फायर जैसा। कार में वो आगे और मैं, रणबीर, मम्मा पीछे बैठते थे। वो जल्दी-जल्दी 10 सवाल पूछते थे, सही जवाब देने वाले को ट्रीट मिलती थी।’ ऋषि कपूर का अचानक दुनिया से रुख्सत होना, परिवार के लिए जोरदार धक्का था। इस पर रिद्धिमा कहती हैं, ‘बहुत खालीपन महसूस होता है। इतना कि बता नहीं सकती। वो टाइम बहुत खराब था। मैं मम्मी (नीतू सिंह) के साथ थी। मेरी, रणबीर, आलिया की पहली प्रायोरिटी थी कि मम्मी ठीक हों। हम उनको बिजी रखते थे कि कैसे भी उन्हें बाहर ले जाना है, उन्हें डिस्ट्रैक्ट करना है, क्योंकि ये बहुत अचानक हुआ था। मैं एक्सप्रेस नहीं कर सकती। वो बहुत डरावनी फीलिंग थी। बहुत खालीपन हो गया। बहुत सूनापन। मैं आज भी कभी उन्हें पास्ट टेंस में रिफर नहीं कर पाती। मैं हमेशा बोलती हूं कि वो अभी हैं, हमें गाइड कर रहे हैं, हमें प्यार कर रहे हैं, आशीर्वाद दे रहे हैं।’ ‘मैं उनसे कई बातें करना चाहती हूं। मुझे कहना है कि हम सब आपको बहुत सेलिब्रेट करते हैं पापा। हम हर रोज फैमिली वीडियो कॉल पर आपकी बातें करते हैं कि अगर आप होते तो क्या बोलते, क्या करते। आज तक एक दिन भी ऐसा नहीं गया, जब आपकी बात न हो।’ बेटी रिद्धिमा के मुताबिक, पिता ऋषि कपूर लार्जर देन लाइफ जिंदगी जीते थे। इसका परिणाम वो किस्से हैं, जो उनकी बेबाकी, हाजिरजवाबी, गुस्से और मजेदार व्यक्तित्व को दर्शाते हैं। कभी उन्होंने अमिताभ को दिया जा रहा अवॉर्ड खरीदकर अपने नाम किया, तो कभी सलमान खान के पिता की धमकी का जवाब दिया। डिंपल कपाड़िया से अफेयर राजीव कपूर (छोटे)। पिता राज कपूर शोमैन थे। ऋषि महज 3 साल के थे, जब पिता राज कपूर, नरगिस के साथ श्री 420 बना रहे थे। फिल्म के मशहूर गाने प्यार हुआ इकरार हुआ में जब राज कपूर को चाइल्ड आर्टिस्ट की जरूरत पड़ी, तो वो अपने बच्चों को सेट पर ले आए। गहरी आंखें और चबी गाल वाले ऋषि हर किसी का ध्यान खींच लिया करते थे। सेट पर उन्हें दूसरे बच्चों के साथ बारिश में भीगना था, लेकिन नाजुक चिंटू जी के ऊपर जैसे ही बूंदें गिरतीं, वो रोना शुरू कर देते। कई बार शॉट खराब हुए और रील्स बर्बाद होने लगीं। तब नरगिस धीरे से उनके पास आईं और कहा, अगर वो बिना रोए शॉट पूरा करते हैं, तो वो उन्हें ढेर सारी चॉकलेट देंगी। खाने-पीने के शौकीन चिंटू राजी क्यों न होते। और इस तरह ऋषि कपूर ने 1955 की फिल्म श्री 420 से बतौर चाइल्ड एक्टर फिल्मों में एंट्री ली। किस्सा-2, कार में भरकर मुगल-ए-आजम के सेट पर ले जाते थे दादा पृथ्वीराज कपूर 1960 में आई फिल्म मुगल-ए-आजम में ऋषि कपूर के दादाजी पृथ्वीराज कपूर ने बादशाह अकबर का किरदार निभाया था। वो अकसर घर के सभी बच्चों को कार में भरकर सेट पर ले जाते थे। तब ऋषि कपूर 6 साल के थे। सारे बच्चे मधुबाला की खूबसूरती देख रहे थे, लेकिन ऋषि कपूर की नजरें दिलीप कुमार पर टिकी थीं। किस्सा- 3, राज कपूर ने सिगरेट पीते देख कर दी पिटाई करीब 15 साल की उम्र में दोस्तों की वजह से ऋषि कपूर को सिगरेट पीने की लत लग गई। वो मुंबई के चैंपियन स्कूल के बाहर कोकाकोला स्टैंड की दुकान से अहमद नाम के दुकानदार से सिगरेट लिया करते थे। एक समय में दुकान में उनकी 300 रुपए उधारी हो गई। एक दिन गुस्से में अहमद से कहा कि अगर उधारी नहीं चुकाई, तो वो राज कपूर को बता देंगे। एक दिन ऋषि कपूर पिता के मेकअप मैन के साथ सिगरेट के कश लगा रहे थे, तभी राज कपूर पहुंच गए। रंगे हाथों पकड़े जाने के बाद राज कपूर ने ऋषि कपूर को खूब पीटा। बता दें कि स्टार बनने के बाद ऋषि कपूर 300 रुपए उधार चुकाने गए थे, लेकिन तब अहमद ने पैसे नहीं लिए और उन्हें बस गले लगा लिया। किस्सा-4, डिंपल कपाड़िया को दी, गर्लफ्रेंड की दी हुई अंगूठी ऋषि कपूर को स्कूल के दिनों में पारसी यास्मीन नाम की लड़की से पहला प्यार हुआ। उन्होंने ही बॉबी से डेब्यू करने वाले ऋषि कपूर को वजन घटाने में मदद की थी। एक दिन यास्मीन ने ऋषि को एक अंगूठी गिफ्ट अवॉर्ड अमिताभ को ही मिलेगा, लेकिन ऋषि कपूर ने 30 हजार रुपए में वो अवॉर्ड खरीद लिया। ऐसा उन्होंने पीआरओ तारकनाथ गांधी और अपने सेक्रेटरी घनश्याम के कहने पर लिया। जैसे ही अमिताभ बच्चन को पता चला कि ऋषि ने अवॉर्ड खरीदा है तो दोनों के बीच कोल्डवॉर छिड़ गई। ऋषि कपूर ने अपनी ऑटोबायोग्राफी खुल्लम-खुल्ला में लिखा कि उन्हें अवॉर्ड खरीदने का पछतावा था और शर्म थी। इसके बाद अमिताभ बच्चन उनसे नाराज हो गए थे। और दोस्त नीतू सिंह ने यास्मीन को कॉल लगवाते थे, लेकिन जवाब नहीं मिलता था। एक दिन ऋषि ताज होटल में थे, तभी उन्हें यास्मीन दिखीं, जो वहां, ऋषि के ही एक पुराने दोस्त के साथ आई थीं। ये देख ऋषि कपूर का दिल टूट गया। 2 हजार लेकर पहुंचे ऋषि कपूर ने 18 हजार रुपए की शराब पी ली। बाद में उनका मैनेजर से खूब झगड़ा हुआ। किस्सा-7, सलीम-जावेद ने दी थी करियर तबाह करने की धमकी, जवाब में कहा- करके दिखाओ जंजीर, शोले लिखने वाले सलीम-जावेद का 80 के दशक में बड़ा नाम था। हर कोई उनकी लिखी फिल्म करना चाहता था। एक बार राइटर जोड़ी ने ऋषि कपूर को फिल्म ऑफर की, जो उन्होंने ठुकरा दी। सलीम-जावेद इससे चिढ़ गए। एक दिन उनकी मुलाकात प्लेमेट क्लब में हुई। सलीम खान (सलमान के पिता) ने ऋषि को देखते ही कहा- तुम्हारी हिम्मत कैसे हुई हमारी फिल्म ठुकराने की। जवाब मिला- मुझे फिल्म पसंद नहीं आई। सलीम ने गुस्से में कहा- तुम जानते नहीं हो क्या कि इंडस्ट्री में आजतक हमें किसी ने इनकार नहीं किया। हम तुम्हारा करियर तबाह कर सकते हैं। ये सुनकर ऋषि कपूर ने कहा- आप मुझे बर्बाद करने के लिए क्या कर सकते हैं। सलीम ने कहा- तुम्हारे साथ के साथ आशा भोसले का प्रोग्राम अटेंड करने दुबई गए थे। एयरपोर्ट पर अचानक एक शख्स उनके पास आया और उन्हें मोबाइल थमाते हुए कहा, दाऊद साहब बात करेंगे। दाऊद ने कॉल पर कहा- किसी भी चीज की जरूरत हो तो बस मुझे बता देना। ये सुनकर ऋषि कपूर डर गए। कुछ समय बाद दाऊद इब्राहिम के राइट हैंड ने उनसे कहा कि दाऊद आपके साथ चाय पीना चाहते हैं। ऋषि कपूर इनकार नहीं कर सके। उसी शाम उनके होटल में एक रोल्स रॉय आई, जो उन्हें Oldest example of restorative dentistry in Scotland found in parish church bone

A bridge made of gold thread found on the skull of a man who died between 1460 and 1670 is the oldest example of restorative dentistry in Scotland. It long predates the advent of professional dentistry in the 19th century, and given the precious material

The gold ligature was found in the East Kirk of St. Nicholas Kirk in Aberdeen. It was discovered during a 2006 salvage excavation before redevelopment that unearthed the remains of around 900 people and tons more disarticulated bones. The mandible with the ligature was part of the disarticulated skeletal material. The remains from the St. Nicholas Kirk excavation were reexamined as part of a recent study of health trends in Scottish history.

The mandible contained nine teeth still in situ. There was enough of it remaining that researchers were able to determine the individual was male and the wear on the teeth indicates he was middle-aged. He had significant tooth decay on the surviving teeth. The cavities in three of the teeth were so large more than 50% of their crowns were destroyed.

A fine gold wire was wound around his right lateral incisor and his left central incisor. The gap where the missing right central incisor had been was bridged by the wire, held in place by a tight knot on the side of the left central incisor. Analysis of the metal composition found that it is 20 carat gold, created by pulling gold through a graduated series of ever smaller holes. The ends of the wire at the knot are flattened, likely from the use of pliers.

There is a furrow on the tooth left by prolonged wear of the wire, evidence that the ligature was in place for a long time before the person died. The shape of the wire drawn across the gap indicates it was tied there after the tooth was lost, and was probably either intended as an anchor to prevent the loss of the right lateral incisor, or as a bridge on which to install a prosthetic tooth (either a human donor tooth or carved from animal bone).

Attempts at restorative dentistry — the repair of damaged or missing teeth — have been found going back to the Neolithic era. Evidence of fillings and dental drilling have been found in remains going back to as much as 6,,500 years ago. Gold wires used as dental ligatures have been found in mummified remains from Old Kingdom Egypt, but appear to have been placed after death as part of the mummification process. The earliest confirmed ligature bridge meant to restore function (rather than as a cosmetic replacement or post-mortem ritual to make the body complete again) dates to Ptolemaic Egypt (303-30 B.C.).

By the Middle Ages, some medical treatises recommended the use of gold or silver wire to stabilize a loose tooth or to fix a replacement tooth into place, but oral care in general was barely touched upon in medical literature. It wasn’t until 1530 that the first dentistry book was published in Germany. Between the limited expertise available to people and the expense necessary to secure precious metals for oral care, dental ligatures on human remains before the 17th century are rare finds, and only a handful of gold ones are known from Portugal and France.

The study authors believe this fine gold wire was installed by the jeweler who made it, although it could have been sourced separately and placed by a barber, barber-surgeon, dentatore, itinerant tooth-drawer or general community healer, all of whom offered some forms of dental treatment before the advent of professionally qualified dentists in the 1860s. They weren’t so adept at the kind of fine-tuned wire knotting work seen in this repair, however.

For certain ailments, specialist materials or appliances were required. As is seen in this case, gold alloy wire was, and still is, a preferred material in restorative and conservative dentistry due to its resistance to corrosion and tarnishing and biocompatibility. Given the materials involved a 20-carat gold, silver and copper alloy, a goldsmith was most likely sought out to craft and possibly even fit the ligature. Between 1460–1670 CE, at least 22 goldsmiths were operating in Aberdeen. Any number of these craftsmen were likely capable of producing a simple gold wire (as described above) and creating the observed tightening knot.

Of the 100 individuals that were excavated from inside the East Kirk of St Nicholas that dated to the Early Modern period, the individual presented here was the only one with clear evidence of dental work. The rarity of this find indicates that such procedures were out of reach for most of the inhabitants of Early Modern Aberdeen. It is likely that the cost of the gold was a barrier to most. It is also possible this individual had this work done elsewhere. Unfortunately, there is no way to be certain of this. […]

Though it was not possible to determine where this individual would have received this treatment, the location of burial (i.e., inside the East Kirk of an affluent parish church) indicates he was a relatively wealthy member of the community. Given the social importance of one’s appearance during the Late Medieval and Early Modern era, as an outward expression of their moral character, it is likely the reasons for undergoing this procedure extended beyond retaining masticatory abilities and oral function.

Chair linked to Ann Boleyn on display at Hever Castle

A 16th century chair that may have been made for Anne Boleyn when she was lady-in-waiting to Queen Claude of France is going on public display for the first time at Hever Castle where Anne lived as a child.

The chair was made in the Loire Valley, a center of Late Gothic French Renaissance furniture and art, between 1510 and 1520 when Anne Boleyn was at the French court. It was spotted by Paul Fitzsimmons of Devon-based Marhamchurch Antiques at an auction in New York in 2022. Fitzsimmons is a Tudor and English oak furniture expert who in 2019 identified a gilded wood falcon as a heraldic badge of Anne Boleyn’s removed from Hampton Court Palace after her execution.

The distinctive linenfold carving on the back of the chair is what caught his eye. The walnut backpanel features two nude putti holding a shield with the initials AB tied together by a knotted, tasseled rope known as a cordelière. The putti stand on the tails of dolphins that curve away from each other symmetrically. Their tails are banded together and a Tudor rose rises from the meeting point. The bloom’s placement is significant as the flower is in the center of the seat back where the sitter’s heart would be. Above the shield are “listener” and “talker” figures, motifs found on French ceremonial seats symbolizing the exchange and witnessing of important words.

These bas-reliefs are rife with symbolism. Dolphins are symbols of the French throne (“Dauphin,” the title for heir to the throne, is the French word for dolphin). The binding of the dolphin tails and the Tudor rose suggests a marriage bond between English and French throne. The AB monogram of Anne Boleyn entwined with a cordelière, symbol of spiritual devotion beloved by Queen Claude of France and her redoubtable mother twice Queen of France, Anne of Brittany, convey her position as a link between the two courts, probably specifically for her role as interpreter at the lavish banquet held at the fortress of the Bastille on December 22, 1518, celebrating the Treaty of Eternal Peace between France, England, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the Papal States sealed by the betrothal of the two-year-old Princess Mary Tudor to the 10-month-old Dauphin, Francis.

Rare Roman calibration plate found in Czech Republic

A rare Roman metalworking tool discovered in the Czech Republic may shed new light on how Roman armor was made.

Experts consider a well-preserved calibration plate intended for stretching and thinning metal wires to be an exceptional find. Its holes are rusted and may contain traces of metal wires.

“We will hand over the calibration plate to the laboratory for spectrometric analysis, which will help us determine what material the wire was made of. The thinned wire could have been used, for example, to make chain mail,” added Moš. According to experts, this is an exceptional find in Central Europe.

The calibration plate was discovered in a rescue archaeology excavation along the route of a high-speed railway being built between Nezamyslice and Kojetín. The excavation of this 1.2 km stretch of the railway has uncovered more than 1,000 objects ranging in date from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period.

The earliest finds are the remains of pile dwellings from the Early Bronze Age Veteřov culture. Details of the plaster coating the wattle and daub walls, including traces of the exterior decoration and the impression of wooden rods (wattle) on the interior, were preserved when the building was destroyed by fire. Other artifacts from the period include ceramic vessels, spindle whorls, beads, a bone needle and a bronze pin with a Cypriot-type head which predates all of the artifacts in the group and is evidence of trade or cultural interactions over long distances. Two burials in the settlement were also discovered, one of them containing the skeletal remains of one adult and one child.

From the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, archaeological materials and human remains of the Urnfield culture were found at the site. There was an Urnfield settlement there, and remains of structures have been unearthed as well as pottery. The most unexpected find was a group of partial skeletal remains in one of the settlement structures. Inside a backfilled pit, archaeologists discovered six skulls placed side by side. Urnfield peoples cremated the dead, and these were not inhumation burials given that there are no other bones, which suggests a ritual purpose. Nothing like that has been found before in Urnfield sites.

Objects relating to metal casting were found in the Urnfield settlement layer. Stone casting molds, crucibles and bronze objects (axes, needles, a knife) indicate these was a specialized workshop at the site where bronze objects were produced. They all date to the period of transition from Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age.

All of the finds recovered in the excavation have been transferred to the Archaeological Center Olomouc. The artifacts are now being cleaned, documented and conserved and subjected to scientific analyses. In addition to the material analysis of the calibration plate, the stone molds will also be tested for traces of the metals cast in them.

2,000-Year-Old Hadrian’s Wall Cup Discovered in Spain

A bronze cup with enamel decoration depicting Hadrian’s Wall has been discovered in Berlanga de Duero, Spain. It is the second vessel of the Hadrian’s Wall type found in Spain, and is the only one of any of them to name forts on the east side of the wall. A new study of the Berlanga Cup has been published in the journal Britannia.

The first of these vessels, later known as Hadrian’s Wall pans, was discovered in Rudge, Wiltshire, in 1725. It was inscribed along the rim with the names of five of the forts on the western sector of Hadrian’s Wall, information which was helped scholars at the time conclusively identify the known forts. The Rudge Cup is decorated with schematic representations of the Wall’s fortlets and turrets in Champlevé enamel (small cells cut into the bronze and filled with different colors of enamel).

In the 20th century, three more vessels and two fragments were found in France, England and Spain. The Hadrian’s Wall type vessels are believed to date to the 130s A.D., shortly after the completion of the Wall. They have been interpreted as souvenirs or presentation vessels acquired near the Wall, but there is no evidence of where they manufactured.

The Berlanga Cup was found in farmland where subsequent archaeological investigations uncovered evidence of a Roman rural settlement or a large country villa complex. It was broken into four fragments, with one of them comprising more than half of the bowl. It is a hemispherical bowl just under 4.5 inches in diameter at the widest point below the rim. About 3.2 inches high, it is the largest of the Hadrian’s Walls pans.

The inscription at the rim is missing some letters due to the missing fragments, but the surviving letters are […]RNVMONNOV[…]DOBALACONDERCOM. This breaks down into the names the forts of Cilurnum (Chesters, Northumberland), Onno (Halton Chesters, Northumberland), Vindobala (Rudchester, Northumberland) and Condercom (Benwell, Northumberland) represented as [CILU]RNUM, ONNO, V[IN]DOBALA and CONDERCOM.

It is enamelled in the same colors as the other pans (navy blue, green, red, turquoise) and like the comparable vessels, it depicts stylized representations of the ashlar masonry of Hadrian’s Wall.

The central frieze is organised into three bands of squares, alternating green and blue, which gives an appearance of unity. Finally, the central frieze combines two types of metopes, separated by a thick serrated cord whose interior is enamelled in red. The first metopes are presented as a projection of the lower frieze in the form of a crenellated tower. The interior of these is divided into four squares filled with blue and turquoise enamel, with two half-moons at the base filled with turquoise. The second type of metope is decorated with four-petalled flowers filled with turquoise enamel. These floral motifs are framed above and below by two green enamelled crescents and, on the sides, by triangles filled with blue enamel. This colourful decoration even extends to the letters and symbols of the inscription, which are also filled with turquoise.

The upper friezes, present on all Hadrian’s Wall pans except the Ilam Pan, have traditionally been interpreted by most researchers as an elevation of the wall itself, from which crenellated turrets protrude, which can be seen as military forts, perhaps those mentioned in the epigraphy. The two largest cups, the Berlanga and the Hildburgh fragment, also show a third frieze at the bottom with curved motifs which, if we follow the majority hypothesis, should be interpreted as the ditch in front of the wall.

The discovery of the Berlanga Cup with its eastern fort names confirm that the pans were not part of a single set. They each name different forts, and they are different enough from each other in shape and design, so they weren’t created to match each other. It’s likely instead that the bodies of the cups were made first, then the bronze finished, the inscription added to order and the enamel applied to the inside of the lettering.

Unique Athena statue found in Laodicea’s ancient theater

A monumental statue of Athena has been unearthed at the ancient West Theater of Laodicea in modern-day Denizli, western Turkey. The white marble statue is two meters (6.6 feet) high without its head, which is broken off at the neck. Its style dates it to the Augustan period (early 1st century A.D.) and has unique features.

Standing on a round base, Athena wears a floor-length Doric peplos (sleeveless and fastened at the shoulders) belted at the hips with a girdle that the extra length of the garment has been drawn up and over giving it a bloused effect. She was a chlamys (cloak) fastened with a brooch at her neck. The rendering of the draping, the variety of widths and depths in the folds of the fabric, attest to the high level of craftsmanship of the carver, and the chlamys is a unique element for Athena iconography.

On her chest is the aegis, covered in snake scales, edges with snakelets and the Gorgoneion, the severed head of Medusa, in the center. Another unusual element is the strap or fold on the top left of the aegis that crosses between Athena’s breasts. Crossed aegis depictions are rare, but they are x-shaped with the Gorgoneion placed where the two straps meet (see this one from Pergamon, for example). This is a breastplate/hide style aegis that either has a diagonal strap or is perhaps the hide folded over which I’ve never seen before. There were a myriad descriptions and interpretations of the aegis in ancient art and literature. This one is in close to Virgil’s description in Book VIII of the Aeneid:

a chilling aegis, the breastplate of Pallas,
competing to burnish its serpent scales of gold,
its interwoven snakes, and the Gorgon herself
on the goddess’s breast, with severed neck and rolling eyes:

In addition to the missing head, the statue’s left arm and right hand are broken off and so far none of the lost body parts have been found. Based on the iconography of other Athena statues, she probably held a spear in her left hand. Her right hand may have held a little winged Victory or been posed on a shield.

The Hellenistic city of Laodicea was founded by Seleucid emperor Antiochus II Theos in the mid-3rd century B.C. who named it after his wife Laodice. It became part of the Rome’s territories when King Attalus III of Pergamon bequeathed his realm to the Republic in 133 B.C. By the early imperial period, it had become an important city in Rome’s Asia province, located on one of the busiest trade routes in Asia Minor and prospering from trade and commerce, including weaving and textile manufacture.

The West Theater was first built in the late Hellenistic period (2nd century B.C.). The stage had a three-story structure with 16 columns on each story. Statues of deities and scenes from Homer’s epics were placed between the columns. Many of the remains of these statues were recovered during recent excavations of the theater, which was extensively reconstructed from its scattered stones and reopened in 2023 with the first performance since the 7th century.

The excavation of the Western Theater’s stage area is ongoing, and the Athena statue was found lying face down next to the postskene, the exterior rear wall of the stage building. Athena as the goddess of weaving was celebrated at the theater during festivals dedicated to one of the city’s main industries.

Charred loaf of bread found at Roman military camp

A Roman charred loaf of bread, preserved for 2,000 years thanks to carbonization, has been discovered in the remains of the ancient military camp of Vindonissa in Windisch, Switzerland. It is the first Roman bread ever discovered in Switzerland.

The site is being excavated prior to construction of a large housing development. Because the location is directly across from the southwestern side of the ancient legionary camp, Canton Argau initiated a rescue archaeology operation to document and recover any archaeological materials. The excavation began in August of last year and is scheduled to continue for 11 months.

Evidence of fortifications that are older than the well-established defenses of the permanent 1st century camp were discovered in two places. Two parallel ditches with post holes at regular intervals between them mark the location of a timber and earth wall. A V-shaped ditch was discovered south of the wall remains. This is the same kind of ditch found almost a century ago that marked the larger permanent fort, and it gives archaeologists the ability to estimate the dimensions of the previous temporary fort: it extended 400 meters (a quarter mile) from north to south.

The remains of a building from the interior of the older camp, preserved by a Roman road that was later built over it, have also been unearthed. It contained two groups of rooms, each consisting of two small rooms next to a larger room with a hearth. Other finds made in the interior include metal tools, blacksmith’s waste, spearheads and projectile points. A clay oven carefully constructed and very large suggests commercial food production took place at the camp.

A black, charred, round object caught the attention of the excavation team during the dig. The object was recovered as a block along with the surrounding soil and immediately transported to the restoration laboratory of the cantonal archaeology department. There, it was carefully unearthed. An initial examination by an archaeobotanist from the Integrative and Natural Science Prehistoric Archaeology department at the University of Basel indicated that it is very likely a charred Roman loaf of bread. The presumed bread has a diameter of ten centimeters and is about three centimeters thick – it looks like a small flatbread.

The bread will now undergo scientific analysis at a specialized laboratory in Vienna. Archaeologists hope to find out more about it, its composition, how it was cooked, its date range, etc.

Depot of medieval cannonballs found in Belgium

An excavation in advance of new construction in Nieuwpoort, Belgium, has uncovered a cache of almost 500 medieval cannonballs. A large arsenal of medieval artillery assembled in a single location is an exceptionally rare find.

The site behind the historic Stadshalle (city hall) is slated to become the town’s new administrative center with the foundation stone to be laid at the end of the year. The Stadshalle has been there since the 13th century and test pits found evidence of archaeological material. Since February, archaeologists have been thoroughly excavating the grounds. They uncovered the remains of structures — walls and floors — from the Middle Ages, but the exact function and dates of the structures have not yet been determined.

Given the age of the Stadshalle, medieval remains were expected finds, but archaeologists were astonished to discover dozens of cannonballs of varying size stored together less than three feet below street level. Stratigraphy dates the cannonballs to between approximately 1350 and 1600. These types of stone balls were fired from cannons, but also used as thrown projectiles in catapults and trebuchets. They are all carefully finished and rounded, however, which suggests they were intended to fit smoothly in the barrels of firearms.

The balls were piled; they didn’t land there randomly in battle. This was an artillery depot strategically located behind City Hall near the medieval southern city walls (now gone). One possible hint is a map from 1641 which depicts a cannon next to that wall close to the find site. The cannonballs may have therefore been an arsenal maintained by the city for defense.

The archaeological fieldwork phase will be completed at the end of this week. This will be followed by an extensive research and reporting phase in which all finds will be further analyzed. Only then will it be possible to draw more detailed conclusions regarding the precise significance of the discovered structures and the cannonball depot.

1,500-year-old kitchen knife set found in Hadrianopolis

Archaeologists have discovered a set of iron kitchen knives and a marble whetstone from Late Antiquity in Hadrianopolis, northern Turkey. Stratigraphic analysis dates them to the 5th or 6th century.

The set was found in the kitchen section of a structure dubbed the Hammam Building Complex. They were in fragments at the time of discovery, broken into around 250 pieces. Archaeologists puzzled them back together in the conservation laboratory of Karabük University, restoring them to their original shapes. The knives are identical in type, but of graduated sizes, just like a modern knife set.

Emphasizing the importance of the knives, [dig leader Ersin Çelikbaş, professor at Karabük University’s Department of Archaeology,] stated: “The fact that the knives were found in the same place indicates that the people living in the Hammam Building Complex were engaged in animal husbandry. Archaeological data had already shown that livestock activities were intensive in Hadrianopolis during antiquity, especially in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods. The discovery of these knives confirms that families involved in animal husbandry lived in the Hadrianopolis region in ancient times.”

(Animal husbandry or butchery? Obviously ones leads to the other in a general sense, but the evidence of meat processing at the location isn’t evidence that the stock were raised for slaughter in that specific building complex. They could have bought the livestock the way butchers do today or sold their butchering services to people who brought in their own. That may be a translation issue or the team has indeed unearthed archaeological evidence of animal husbandry at the site but the articles are just focused on the knives because of how cool it is that they found a matched graduated set like you’d find in any modern kitchen.)

Pointing out that the knives are rare examples from a typological perspective, Çelikbaş continued: “The fact that they were found as a set is also very important. We can say that they are significant archaeological finds both methodologically and in terms of providing important data about the social life here. In addition, a sharpening stone was found alongside the knives. This is also important for us because there is a quarry in the Eskipazar region, known from the Turkish-Islamic and especially the Ottoman period, that produces a stone called ‘kösüre stone.’ This stone was famously used during the Ottoman period for sharpening knives and cutting tools.”

The discovery of the knives and stone together is evidence that the same type of stone used to sharpen blades in the Ottoman era (between 1300 and 1922) was in active use in the region much earlier.
