Bronze Age “enigmatic tablet” found in northern Italy

A new 4,000-year-old clay tablet with markings whose symbolism has yet to be deciphered has been unearthed at the prehistoric pile dwelling site of Lucone di Polpenazze in Lombardy, northern Italy. This is the third so-called enigmatic tablet found in the Lucone D sector, the 21st tablet to be discovered at the overall Lucone site.

The tablets, usually made of clay but sometimes of stone, feature incised lines and impressions of geometric shapes including triangles, squares and circles. The oldest of the tablets are predominately characterized by impressed dots.

They have been interpreted as possible calendars, counting tools, or forms of proto-writing. A ritual function has not been ruled out either, extending to the hypothesis that they might have been used as a sort of sacred amulet. One of the most intriguing interpretations today, however, links them to the management of trade, suggesting a function comparable, in some respects, to modern shipping documents used to identify specific goods (perhaps metal).

In addition to northern Italy, enigmatic tablets have been found in Switzerland, Germany and the Danube-Carpathian Basin area in southeastern Central Europe. The largest single concentration of them has been discovered at the Lucone di Polpenazze site.

Located close to Lake Garda, the Lucone di Polpenazze site is now a shallow basin, but in prehistory was a small lake housing at least five distinct pile dwelling settlements occupied from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age. The Lucone D sector is a small pile-dwelling village from the early Bronze Age. Radiocarbon dating of the oak logs used to build the houses on stilts dates the village to 2034 B.C. The distribution of the houses indicates they were built over the full lake, not when the water was low, attesting to the engineering prowess of the community. Archaeologists also discovered that household waste was ejected off the platforms the houses were perched on creating a layer cake of organic remains

What makes Lucone D exceptional among the other pile dwellings at the site is that the village was struck by a catastrophic fire which destroyed the homes but carbonized and preserved many materials that would normally have decomposed. Wooden sickles, loom weights, linen fragments, seeds and the remains of food in a ceramic bowl have survived in carbonized form. The conflagration even preserved some of the sun-dried clay of the dwellings, firing it as it were in a kiln.

Rare intact 17th century drawing book donated to Rijksmuseum

An exceptionally rare drawing book from the early 17th century has been donated to the Rijksmuseum by the family who has owned it for more than 300 years. Very few drawing books from the period have survived intact because individual drawings were more saleable so the pages made much more money when sold piecemeal. The books were taken apart, bindings destroyed, and the pages scattered.

The Van Eeghen Drawing Book contains about 30 full-page drawings of biblical scenes, some on blue paper, and smaller studies of figures and animals. They are in exceptional condition, because unlike drawings that were cut out of their bindings, the pages inside the book were almost never exposed to light.

The book is named after the Van Eeghen family who treasured the intact book, handing it down through the generations for more than three centuries without selling a single drawing, even though neither they nor anybody else knew who the artist was. It was only very recently, about 20 years ago, that C.P. van Eeghen (1921-2014) saw a drawing by Rombout Uylenburgh in the Rijksmuseum collection and connected it to one in the book.

Rombout Uylenburgh (1580/85–1627/28) was born in Leeuwarden, in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. His family moved to Kraków when he was still a boy and he grew up to become painter at the court of Polish King Sigismund III. He moved to Danzig in 1612 where his career continued to thrive. He specialized in grisailles, monochrome paintings in shades of grey.

After Rombout Uylenburgh’s death, he quickly fell into obscurity, even as his family became ever more prominent on the business side. His brother Hendrick, who had worked for Sigismund III as a commercial agent acquiring art works for the king, moved to Amsterdam and became Rembrandt’s art dealer. Rembrandt’s wife Saskia was one of Rombout and Hendrick’s cousins.

There is no documentation of how the Van Eeghen family acquired the book, but there’s a hint on the binding: an inscription in gold lettering reading “Konstboeck voor Reyer Claessoon” (“Art book for Reyer Claessoon”). Reyer Claessoon was a prominent member of the Dutch community in Danzig when Rombout Uylenburgh lived there. He and Uylenburgh were both Mennonites, so almost certainly knew each other personally. The Van Eeghen family were also part of the Danzig Mennonite community. This is likely the path the book took.

Only two drawings by Uylenburgh are known to survive, one of which is in the Rijksmuseum collection, plus a handful of his paintings, so the Van Eeghen Drawing Book is now one of the stand-out treasures of the Rijksmuseum Print Room Collection. With a loan from the Rembrandt House Museum, the Rijksmuseum has brought together most of the surviving works by Uylenburgh for a special exhibition introducing the drawing book and the little known artist to the public.

रेणुका शहाणे कास्टिंग काउच से जूझीं:‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ के बाद फिल्में छोड़ीं, टीवी पर ऐसा किरदार निभाया, फैंस बोले- आपसे उम्मीद नहीं थी

रेणुका शहाणे का नाम आते ही लोगों के जेहन में ‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ की संस्कारी भाभी पूजा और ‘सुरभि’ का सहज चेहरा उभरता है। लेकिन उनकी कहानी सिर्फ एक सुपरहिट फिल्म और लोकप्रिय टीवी शो तक सीमित नहीं है। मनोविज्ञान की पढ़ाई से लेकर थिएटर, टीवी, फिल्मों और निर्देशन तक रेणुका ने हर पड़ाव पर अपनी शर्तों पर काम किया। सफलता के बाद भी उन्होंने लोकप्रियता के बजाय ऐसे किरदार चुने, जिनसे उन्हें कुछ नया सीखने गईं। स्क्रिप्ट से स्टेज तक का सफर देखकर उन्हें थिएटर की ताकत महसूस हुई। वह कहती हैं, “उस समय मैंने यह नहीं सोचा था कि मुझे अभिनेत्री बनना है, लेकिन यह जरूर तय किया कि मुझे थिएटर का हिस्सा बनना है।” यहीं से उनके भीतर अभिनय के प्रति नया जुनून पैदा हुआ। मां के दोस्त सत्यदेव दुबे ने पूछा- अभिनय करोगी? इस बार जवाब ‘हां’ था रेणुका की मां शांता गोखले के करीबी दोस्त और दिग्गज थिएटर निर्देशक सत्यदेव दुबे अक्सर उनके घर आते थे। वह रेणुका से बार-बार पूछते थे कि क्या वह अभिनय करेंगी। शुरुआत में वह पढ़ाई को प्राथमिकता देते हुए मना कर देती थीं। लेकिन ‘अंधेर नगरी’ के अनुभव के बाद उनका नजरिया बदल चुका था। अगली बार सत्यदेव दुबे ने वही सवाल पूछा तो रेणुका ने हामी भर दी। इसके बाद उन्होंने उनके साथ वर्कशॉप्स कीं और मराठी थिएटर की संस्था ‘अंतरनाट्य’ के साथ एक्सपेरिमेंटल थिएटर किया। उन्होंने अभिनय के साथ सेट, मेकअप, कॉस्ट्यूम और लाइटिंग जैसे काम भी सीखे। यही उनकी असली ट्रेनिंग बनी। एक्टिंग करियर नहीं, शौक था; फिर ‘सर्कस’ ने बदल दी सोच थिएटर करते-करते रेणुका की मुलाकात उस दुनिया से हुई, जिसे वह शुरू में करियर नहीं मानती थीं। उन्होंने टीवी शो ‘पीसी और मौसी’ से स्क्रीन पर शुरुआत की और इसके बाद ‘सर्कस’ में काम किया। शाहरुख खान स्टारर ‘सर्कस’ उनके लिए निर्णायक मोड़ साबित हुआ। निर्देशक अजीज मिर्जा ने उन्हें अभिनय को गंभीरता से लेने की सलाह दी। उस समय रेणुका क्लिनिकल साइकोलॉजी में एमए कर चुकी थीं और पीएचडी करने के बारे में सोच रही थीं। लेकिन अजीज मिर्जा ने उन्हें समझाया कि अभिनय में हुनर है तो इसे में ‘सुरभि’ आई। सिद्धार्थ काक के साथ इस कार्यक्रम ने उन्हें देशभर में पहचान दिलाई। छोटे बाल, साड़ी और सहज अंदाज में नजर आने वाली रेणुका का व्यक्तित्व दर्शकों को पसंद आया। लेकिन इस मुकाम से पहले उन्होंने करियर की दिशा बदलने का बड़ा फैसला लिया था। रेणुका कहती हैं, “मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि मुझे अभिनेत्री बनना है। शुरुआत में तो सिर्फ थिएटर का हिस्सा बनना चाहती थी। लेकिन धीरे-धीरे एक्टिंग मेरा पैशन बन गया और फिर यही मेरा प्रोफेशन बन गया।” ‘सुरभि’ की सफलता ने उन्हें सिर्फ अभिनेत्री नहीं, बल्कि दर्शकों से सीधे जुड़ने वाला चेहरा बना दिया। ‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ की पूजा बनने से पहले ही मिल गई थी चेतावनी 1994 में सूरज बड़जात्या की फिल्म ‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ रिलीज हुई और रेणुका शहाणे का किरदार पूजा घर-घर में पहचान बन गया। वह माधुरी दीक्षित की बड़ी बहन और सलमान खान की भाभी बनी थीं। लेकिन रोल स्वीकार करने से पहले उन्हें एक अहम चेतावनी दी गई थी। राजकुमार बड़जात्या ने उन्हें बताया था कि भाभी का किरदार करने के बाद इंडस्ट्री उन्हें इसी तरह के रोल में देखने लग सकती है। फिर भी रेणुका ने फिल्म की। उनकी प्राथमिकता हीरोइन बनना नहीं, बल्कि अच्छा किरदार निभाना था। फिल्म की जबरदस्त सफलता के बाद यही चेतावनी सच साबित हुई और उनके सामने नई चुनौती खड़ी हो गई। फिल्म हिट हुई तो ऑफर्स बढ़े, लेकिन किरदार वही रहे ‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ के बाद रेणुका के पास फिल्मों के ऑफर्स की कमी नहीं थी। परेशानी यह थी कि ज्यादातर ऑफर्स में किरदार नहीं बदल रहे थे। उन्हें बार-बार हीरो की बहन, भाभी या ‘अच्छी भारतीय लड़की’ के रोल दिए जा रहे थे। रेणुका ने महसूस किया कि फिल्मों में उनकी पहचान एक ही तरह के किरदार में सीमित की जा रही है। दूसरी तरफ टेलीविजन पर उन्हें ज्यादा मजबूत और चुनौतीपूर्ण भूमिकाएं मिल रही थीं। इसलिए उन्होंने फिल्मों से दूरी बनाकर टीवी को प्राथमिकता दी। उनके लिए सिर्फ फिल्म में काम करना उपलब्धि नहीं था। वह ऐसा काम करना चाहती थीं, जिसमें अभिनेत्री के तौर पर खुद को साबित करने की गुंजाइश हो। ‘फिल्म नहीं, अच्छा किरदार चाहिए’- यही सोच उन्हें बाकी कलाकारों से अलग करती रही फिल्मों को मना करने के फैसले के पीछे रेणुका की महत्वाकांक्षा का अलग नजरिया था। वह किसी खास मुकाम तक पहुंचने की दौड़ में शामिल नहीं थीं। उन्होंने कहा, “मेरी महत्वाकांक्षा यह नहीं थी कि मुझे किसी खास मुकाम तक पहुंचना है। इसलिए मुझे जो भी मिल रहा था, वह मेरे लिए एक अतिरिक्त खुशी थी।” थिएटर की ट्रेनिंग ने उन्हें सिखाया था कि काम की गुणवत्ता लोकप्रियता से ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है। वह बताती हैं कि थिएटर में सामने पांच दर्शक हों या सौ, कलाकार उतनी ही शिद्दत से काम करता था। यही अनुशासन उन्होंने फिल्मों और टीवी में भी अपनाया। इसलिए सफलता के बावजूद उन्होंने सिर्फ नाम के लिए काम स्वीकार नहीं किया। टीवी पर किया ऐसा रोल, जिसे देखकर दर्शकों ने कहा- ‘आपसे ऐसी उम्मीद नहीं थी’ ‘सुरभि’ के बाद रेणुका ने ‘सैलाब’, ‘जुनून’, ‘घुटन’, ‘9 मालाबार हिल’ और ‘कोरा कागज’ जैसे कई टीवी प्रोजेक्ट्स किए। यहां उन्हें अपनी ‘भाभी’ वाली छवि से बिल्कुल अलग किरदार निभाने का मौका मिला। ‘सैलाब’ में उन्होंने ऐसी महिला का किरदार निभाया था, जिसका एक्स्ट्रा-मैरिटल अफेयर था। दर्शकों के लिए यह भूमिका चौंकाने वाली थी, क्योंकि उनके मन में रेणुका की छवि संस्कारी और सहज महिला की बन चुकी थी। खुद रेणुका ने बताया कि लोग उनसे कहते थे, “आपसे ऐसी उम्मीद नहीं थी।” इस दौर में उन्होंने साबित किया कि लोकप्रिय छवि के पीछे एक बहुआयामी अभिनेत्री भी मौजूद है। करियर में स्ट्रगल? रेणुका का जवाब सुनकर कहानी का पूरा नजरिया बदल जाता है रेणुका की कहानी में स्ट्रगल का सवाल भी दिलचस्प है। वह मानती हैं कि उन्हें बहुत ज्यादा संघर्ष नहीं करना पड़ा। इसकी एक वजह उनका मुंबई में जन्म और परिवार का मजबूत सपोर्ट था। ऑडिशन में काम नहीं मिलता था तो भी उनके पास घर और परिवार था। वह कहती हैं, “जब भी मुझे कोई किरदार नहीं मिलता था या मैं ऑडिशन देकर आती थी, तो मेरे पास अपना घर और परिवार था। सिर पर छत थी और खाने-पीने की कोई परेशानी नहीं थी।” वह मानती हैं कि आर्थिक सुरक्षा ने उन्हें अपने मन का काम चुनने की आजादी दी। इसलिए वह खुद को संघर्ष से ज्यादा ‘ब्लेस्ड’ मानती हैं। पहली शादी टूटी, लेकिन रेणुका ने रिश्तों से उम्मीद नहीं छोड़ी रेणुका की निजी जिंदगी भी हमेशा आसान नहीं रही। उनकी पहली शादी मराठी थिएटर लेखक और निर्देशक विजय केंकरे से हुई थी, लेकिन रिश्ता ज्यादा लंबा नहीं चला और दोनों का तलाक हो गया। इस अनुभव का असर इसलिए भी गहरा था क्योंकि बचपन में उन्होंने अपने माता-पिता का अलगाव भी देखा था। रेणुका ने बताया था कि जब उनके माता-पिता अलग हुए, तब वह सिर्फ आठ साल की थीं। कुछ लोग अपने बच्चों को उनसे खेलने से रोकते थे और कहते थे कि वह ‘टूटे हुए परिवार’ से आती हैं। आगे चलकर परिवार और रिश्तों की जटिलताएं उनकी रचनात्मक सोच का हिस्सा बनीं। 34-35 की उम्र में फिर प्यार हुआ, आशुतोष राणा के साथ शुरू हुई नई कहानी पहली शादी टूटने के बाद रेणुका ने दोबारा शादी को लेकर जल्दबाजी नहीं की। फिर उनकी जिंदगी में अभिनेता आशुतोष राणा आए। दोनों ने करीब तीन साल डेट करने के बाद 25 मई 2001 को शादी की। यह रिश्ता खास था, क्योंकि रेणुका लोकप्रिय अभिनेत्री थीं, जबकि आशुतोष राणा अपने दमदार विलेन किरदारों के लिए पहचाने जाते थे। पहली शादी के अनुभव के बाद रेणुका का रिश्ते और शादी को लेकर नजरिया ज्यादा परिपक्व हो चुका था। दोनों के दो बेटे हैं- शौर्यमान और सत्येंद्र। लंबे वैवाहिक जीवन के बावजूद दोनों ने पर्दे पर साथ बहुत कम काम किया। कास्टिंग काउच का ऑफर आया तो रेणुका ने काम से ज्यादा अपनी शर्तों को चुना रेणुका के करियर का एक कड़वा अनुभव भी रहा, जिसके बारे में उन्होंने काफी समय बाद खुलकर बात की। 2025 में उन्होंने जूम चैनल को दिए इंटरव्यू में बताया था कि शुरुआती दिनों में एक शादीशुदा निर्माता उनके घर आया था। उसने साड़ी कंपनी का ब्रांड एंबेसडर बनाने का प्रस्ताव दिया, लेकिन साथ में ऐसा निजी प्रस्ताव रखा जिसे रेणुका ने स्वीकार नहीं किया। निर्माता ने उनके साथ रहने के बदले हर महीने स्टाइपेंड देने की बात कही थी। रेणुका और उनकी मां इस प्रस्ताव से हैरान रह गईं। उन्होंने साफ इनकार कर दिया। यह घटना उनके लिए सिर्फ एक गलत प्रस्ताव नहीं थी, बल्कि उस माहौल की हकीकत भी थी, जहां गलत लोगों को मना करने की कीमत करियर में चुकानी पड़ सकती थी। ‘ना’ कहने की कीमत पता थी, फिर भी समझौता नहीं किया कास्टिंग काउच के अनुभव को बताते हुए रेणुका ने कहा कि इंडस्ट्री में किसी प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति के गलत प्रस्ताव को ठुकराने के बाद बदले की कार्रवाई का खतरा रहता है। किसी प्रोजेक्ट से निकालना या काम से दूर रखना जैसी स्थितियां पैदा हो सकती हैं। लेकिन उन्होंने करियर की कीमत पर भी अपनी सीमाओं से समझौता नहीं किया। यही बात उनकी पूरी यात्रा में दिखाई देती है। चाहे ‘हम आपके हैं कौन’ में भाभी का रोल स्वीकार करना हो, उसके बाद उसी तरह के रोल से दूरी बनानी हो या गलत प्रस्ताव ठुकराना- रेणुका ने हर बार वही चुना, जो उन्हें सही लगा। अभिनेत्री से निर्देशक बनीं, मां की कहानी को पर्दे पर उतारा अभिनय के साथ रेणुका के भीतर निर्देशन की इच्छा भी लंबे समय से थी। ‘लाइफलाइन’ में उन्होंने असिस्टेंट डायरेक्टर के तौर पर काम किया था। बाद में उन्होंने मराठी फिल्म ‘रीटा’ से निर्देशन की शुरुआत की। यह फिल्म उनकी मां शांता गोखले के उपन्यास ‘रीटा वेलिंगकर’ पर आधारित थी। इसके बाद 2021 में उन्होंने हिंदी फिल्म ‘त्रिभंगा’ का निर्देशन किया, जिसमें काजोल, तन्वी आजमी और मिथिला पालकर नजर आईं। फिल्म में मां-बेटी के रिश्ते, परिवार, महत्वाकांक्षा और अलगाव की जटिलताओं को दिखाया गया। जिस निजी अनुभव को उन्होंने बचपन में महसूस किया था, वही आगे चलकर उनकी रचनात्मक दुनिया का हिस्सा बना। हाल ही में रेणुका ने ‘तर्पण’ नाम की शॉर्ट फिल्म बनाई है, जिसमें पहली बार अपने पति आशुतोष राणा को डायरेक्ट किया। आज पीछे मुड़कर देखती हैं तो कोई मलाल नहीं, कहती हैं- ‘मुझे बहुत कुछ मिला है’ रेणुका शहाणे से जब पूछा गया कि क्या उन्हें लगता है कि जिंदगी में कुछ छोटा रह गया या कुछ और हासिल करना बाकी था, तो उनका जवाब उनकी पूरी यात्रा का सार है। वह कहती हैं, “नहीं, मैं ऐसा नहीं सोचती। क्योंकि जो मुझे मिला है, वह बहुत मिला है। मैंने तो कभी इसकी मांग भी नहीं की थी।” वह मानती हैं कि किसी अभिनेत्री के लिए अच्छी भूमिका मिलना ही बड़ी बात है और उन्हें एक नहीं, बल्कि कई ऐसी भूमिकाएं मिलीं, जिन्होंने इतिहास रचा। वह इसे उपलब्धि से ज्यादा ‘कृपा और ब्लेसिंग’ मानती हैं। यही वजह है कि सफलता के इतने साल बाद भी उनमें अधूरेपन का भाव नहीं है। ‘मैंने कभी अवॉर्ड लेकर स्पीच की प्रैक्टिस नहीं की’- रेणुका की सफलता का असली मंत्र रेणुका की सफलता की कहानी का सबसे दिलचस्प पहलू यही है कि उन्होंने कभी सफलता को लक्ष्य बनाकर काम नहीं किया। वह कहती हैं, “मैंने कभी आईने के सामने खड़े होकर कोई अवॉर्ड हाथ में लेकर स्पीच की प्रैक्टिस नहीं की।” वह थिएटर में शौक और पैशन के तौर पर आई थीं। उन्हें पता ही नहीं चला कि कब थिएटर उनका व्यवसाय और अभिनय उनका प्रोफेशन बन गया। हर काम से उन्होंने कुछ नया सीखा और लोकप्रियता को उपलब्धि के बजाय अतिरिक्त खुशी की तरह लिया। यही Objects from Scotland’s richest Iron Age burial on display

Grave goods from the richest Iron Age burial ever discovered in Scotland have gone on display for the first time in a new exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland.

The skeletal remains of a young warrior were discovered in a stone-lined cist grave opposite the town hall of Alloa in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. The site on Marshill was excavated in 2003 before construction of residential homes. Archaeologists found he was between 17 and 25 years old when he died in the 1st century A.D. The young man was marked as a warrior because of his grave goods: an iron sword with a two-foot-long blade in a leather scabbard placed across his chest, a spear by his side.

He was richly adorned with jewelry, including a glass bead pendant, a bronze fibula, a belt with bronze and iron rings and two bronze toe rings. While his shoes were either not buried or had decomposed over the centuries, the toe rings suggest he wore sandals, another indicator of his elite status.

Iron Age burials are very seldom found in Scotland, and ones with weapons are even more rare. This one was unique not just for the overall richness of its contents, but also because some of the individual pieces had never been found before. The belt with rings, for example, was unprecedented on the Scottish archaeological record.

Dr Matthew Knight, Senior Curator of Prehistory at National Museums Scotland, said:

“The remarkable objects from the Marshill burial give us a vivid insight into the mindset of prehistoric communities living in Scotland almost 2,000 years ago. Burying people with weapons may reflect the person’s role in life as a warrior, or how their community wanted them to be seen in the afterlife. These treasured objects tell us this young man was a powerful member of his community. Following extensive research and conservation, I am thrilled that visitors will have the opportunity to see these objects for the first time in Scotland’s First Warriors.”

The Scotland’s First Warriors exhibition runs through May 16, 2027. It features more than 200 objects related to conflict and violence in Scotland from the Neolithic through the Roman era, including other artifacts that have never been displayed before, such as the Carnoustie Hoard of Bronze Age weapons.

Update: pre-Hispanic mosaic skull repatriated to Mexico

The Mixtec human skull with turquoise, shell, jadeite and quartz mosaic ornamentation has been repatriated to Mexico after more than 60 years spent on display at the National Museum of Ethnology (Wereldmuseum) in Leiden, the Netherlands. It will first go on display at the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, but its permanent home will be the Yucu Saa Community Museum in Villa de Tututepec, Oaxaca, a local museum in the heart of the indigenous Ñuu Savi community, descendants of the Mixtec.

The Wereldmuseum acquired the skull from an American antiquities dealer in 1963 for the equivalent of about $20,000. There was no provenance, very common in an era when unrestrained looting of archaeological sites was rampant and neither the market nor collectors nor museums cared about legitimate ownership histories. The elaborate adornment of the skull ranked it as one of the greatest examples of Mixtec craftsmanship from the Late Postclassic Period (1200-1521 A.D.).

Doubts begin to rise about its authenticity in 2010 after a similar skull was discovered to be a forgery. Studies in 2011 and 2012 found that the skull itself and the mosaic materials did date to that period, but 99% of the adhesive used to affix the mosaic to the skull was from the 20th century. Researchers believe it was created in Oaxaca’s border region using turquoise and human remains found in a dry cave to create a plausible fake for the international art market.

The campaign for repatriation came a decade later when artist Daniel Aguilar Ruvalcaba found about the skull and its complex history while he was in Amsterdam doing a residency at the Rijksakademie. He teamed up with the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective, an organization dedicated to the promotion of Ñuu Savi culture and rights, to petition the Netherlands’ government for restitution. In 2023, Mexico’s government filed a request for repatriation which was approved at the end of 2024.

The skull was officially returned to Mexico in May 2025 where it was transferred to the Directorate of Public Registry of Monuments and Archaeological and Historical Zones (DRPMZAH) of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Physical anthropologist Olaf Bello Cardoso, from the DRPMZAH, emphasizes that the skull offers biological and social information, which can be further studied in complementary studies, such as radiocarbon dating. He considers it feasible to obtain samples from some teeth or from the temporal bone, the hardest part of the skull, which exceptionally preserves ancient DNA.

“From an anthropological perspective, in addition to conducting physical analyses of the skull, it is important to decipher who the person behind the turquoise mosaic is. For example, it is known that the skull from Tomb 7 of Monte Albán was part of an offering dedicated to a principal figure; in the case of the now repatriated skull, it is possible that the intention was to exalt the individual with the ornamentation of his skull,” he notes.

Meanwhile, the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective submitted a petition signed by 1,020 residents of Tututepec to INAH asking that their ancestor’s skull be displayed at the community’s own museum, not in the capital. INAH representatives visited the Yucu Saa Museum in June and worked on a plan for the Mixtec’s skull’s safe display. The museum is working to improve its security and exhibition space to make it appropriate for such a significant piece. The plan is for the skull to go on display there in April 2027 after the changes have been completed.

Update: Royal Sovereign Trafalgar flag bought by museum

The flag flown from HMS Royal Sovereign at the Battle of Trafalgar has been saved for the nation by the North East Museums. One of only three surviving British flags from the epic 1805 battle between the English and Napoleonic navies, it sold at auction to a foreign buyer last year. The UK’s Minister of Culture placed a temporary export bar on the flag to prevent it leaving the country and giving local institutions the chance to acquire it.

Thanks to donations from organizations, including £400,000 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, North East Museums was able to raise the purchase price of £450,000 ($600,000) and secure this iconic emblem of Britain. They are now raising funds to create a permanent custom display for this huge flag at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.

The flag has a specific connection to northeastern England. It is also known as the Collingwood Trafalgar flag after Vice Admiral Collingwood, commander of HMS Royal Sovereign and Newcastle upon Tyne native. He was just 13 years old when he enlisted in the British navy in 1761, and worked his way up the ranks, earing the rank of vice-admiral and serving as second in command of the British Fleet under Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Not only was Collingwood a local lad, but much of his crew was too. They were nicknamed the “Tars of the Tyne” because so many of them came from the Tyne and Wear county of northeastern England. Furthermore, they weren’t just fighting under this flag, they actually made it too. It is the only one of the three surviving Trafalgar flags that was handmade by the crew of the ship whose foremast it flew from.

The Union Flag will form the centrepiece of a new permanent display at Discovery Museum, Newcastle, that will celebrate an important regional and national figure and a significant moment in British history.

It will be located in a new section of the museum’s popular Story of the Tyne gallery, which showcases an extensive maritime collection, covering Tyneside’s shipbuilding industry, innovations in maritime technology, and one of the best ship model collections in the country.

The display will also tell the story of the local men who served in Nelson’s navy – there were over 500 ‘Geordie’ sailors at the Battle of Trafalgar.

First confirmed trebuchet victim identified at Stirling Castle

A new examination of the skeletal remains of man killed seven centuries ago at Stirling Castle in Scotland has found his body was shattered by a blow from above that then pinned him to the ground. This is the first confirmed evidence of casualty inflicted by trebuchet.

Skeleton 150 was discovered in a 1997 excavation under Stirling Castle’s chapel. It was one of nine buried there in the early 1300s, anomalous burials for the period as bodies were usually buried outside the castle walls. Burial under the chapel suggests the survivors had to bury the dead inside the castle because they had no access to the outside. Of the nine bodies found there, five bore the marks of blunt and sharp-force trauma. The atypical burials and the severe injuries indicate they died during a siege, most likely the longest and most destructive one that took place in 1304.

Stirling Castle, a royal residence to Scottish kings since the early 12th century, is located on the main route to Edinburgh and overlooks a key strategic crossing of the River Forth. That put it in the crosshairs during conflicts with England, and the castle has been besieged at least eight times, including during the Wars of Scottish Independence (1296-1357).

Between 1296 when Edward I of England invaded Scotland and 1304 when Stirling was taken by Edward’s forces after a brutal three-month siege, it had changed hands five times. In 1304, it was in Scottish hands again, governed by Sir William Oliphant who held it was a small complement of 25 men. Even when all of the other castles had fallen and the Scottish nobles surrendered, Stirling resisted.

Edward decided to crush Stirling once and for all as a cautionary tale. In April, 1304, Edward ordered Scottish nobles to send soldiers, cavalry and supplies to support the siege of Stirling. He pulled materials to build siege engines from Newcastle and Scotland, stripping the lead roofs off of Scottish churches and confiscating all of the iron and boulders he could get from Glasgow. When the attack began, Edward had assembled the largest array of siege engines in English history. There were at least 13 catapults and trebuchets barraging the castle with massive stones and Greek fire.

For three months Stirling held tight against the assault. Edward ordered construction of the largest trebuchet ever built up to that point in full view of the besieged. He dubbed the beast War Wolf (Loup de Guerre), and when Oliphant saw it, he knew it was over. He surrendered, which did not suit Edward’s purpose, so War Wolf was deployed anyway, and flung a 300-pound stone which broke through the curtain wall and crushed the castle gatehouse. Contemporary chronicler Matthew Paris, who was a witness to events, described the projectile breaking through two massive defensive walls “as an arrow would fly through a piece of cloth.”

University of Bradford bioarchaeologist Jo Buckberry and Historic Environment Scotland teamed up to examine the chapel bones.

Skeleton 150 stood out. Buckberry counted more than 160 separate fractures on the 165-centimeter-tall remains, including a skull smashed in 61 places, a deep, zigzag break to a shoulder, and nearly 60 strange, zigzagging breaks to the ribs. “It’s very clear the energy is going through the chest,” says Uppsala University biological anthropologist Patrick Randolph-Quinney, who worked with Buckberry on the skeletal analysis. “The individual is pinned to the ground quite quickly afterwards.”

The extensive injuries to the rest of the body—particularly the strange breaks on the rib cage and a shattered right leg—ruled out the most obvious possibility, a head-first fall from the castle’s walls. The shape and texture of the breaks eliminated trampling by horses and damage to the skeleton after burial.

To solve the mystery, Buckberry scoured the forensic and medical literature and searched through anatomical collections for equivalent injuries. “It looks like he was hit from behind by something traveling at a great velocity. The most similar cases I was finding were car crashes and people hit by trains,” Buckberry says. “But how do you get from there to a guy in medieval Scotland? What is large and moving very, very quickly in 1304 [C.E.]?”

That would be a 300-pound boulder flung by a trebuchet.

A new analysis of the skeletal remains recovered from the unprecedented mass grave discovered under a Vienna soccer field in October 2024 has confirmed they died in a violent mass fatality event, and that they took many projectiles to the groin before they died.

When the mass grave was first unearthed, archaeologists thought it was be related to the near-by medieval and early modern cemetery, perhaps a plague pit or the victims of one of the Ottoman sieges of Vienna. Roman remains had never been found in the Hasenleitengasse area of the city, but as the excavation progressed, the sheer density of remains — at least 128 individuals crammed into a 16.5 by 15-foot pit — made it completely different from any other known mass graves. Radiocarbon dating of the remains and few objects found in the grave date it to the late 1st/early 2nd century A.D.

Analysis of the remains has found that all of the 129 individuals were young adult males between the ages of 18 and 35. At least 48 of them suffered a violent trauma injuries (sharp force, blunt force, projectile penetration), 85% of them inflicted at the time of death (perimortem). They were interred under time pressure, resulting in a disorganized grave with individuals entwined with each other in multiple orientations.

From the injury evidence, researchers determined the deceased were likely soldiers who died in one violent clash. However, there is no other evidence, either in historical literature or on the archaeological record, of a battle having taken place in this area at that time.

Bioarchaeologist Sheridan Strang and the research team of the archaeology firm Novetus discovered that the sharp trauma injuries were distributed all over the bodies, while blunt trauma was mostly on the skulls. The projectile trauma, on the other hand, was concentrated in deceased’s groins.

The most likely scenario for these pelvic injuries is an attacker on the ground using a throwing lance and targeting a gap in an enemy’s armor as he rode horseback.

“We have one individual where the lance head was still inside the pelvis when we excavated him,” Strang told Live Science. “The people who caused these injuries were aiming for these sensitive areas,” she said.

The Hasenleitengasse mass grave is an important site for understanding projectile weapon use, Patrick Randolph-Quinney, a biological anthropologist at Uppsala University in Sweden who was not involved in the research, told Live Science. The fact that projectile trauma was focused on the groin and lower limbs “tells us about a possible lack of armor and protection in those areas — but also that the attackers knew how to incapacitate based on soft-tissue anatomy,” he said.

To find out more about whether the soldiers were Roman or Germanic tribesmen from the local Marcomanni people or somebody else entirely, the team performed DNA analysis of 25 of the skeletons. The results confirmed that the deceased were male and determined a surprising diversity of origins in the small sample. Some came from Italy, other from mainland Europe and three were from the eastern Mediterranean and the Levant.

“These individuals may have been Roman military personnel,” Strang said. “But they might not all be Romans. There’s a chance that it is a commingled grave, with Romans and another Germanic tribe.”

Research on the skeletal remains is ongoing. Next on the agenda is stable isotope analysis to narrow down where they came from, plus investigating their overall health, what they ate and whether they suffered from any diseases.

Carausius denarius found in railway excavation

Archaeological investigations along the route of new railway construction have uncovered Roman artifacts, including a rare silver denarius minted by the self-styled Emperor Carausius (ca. 250-293 A.D.) The coin dates to 287 A.D. and bears the laureate, draped bust of Carausius facing right encircled by the inscription IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG (“Emperor Carausius, Pious and Blessed Augustus”).

Carausius was not an Emperor of Rome. He was a Roman citizen of the Manapii people in Belgium and an officer in the Roman navy. He was the commander of the Roman fleet Classis Britannica based in the English Channel when he got in trouble for taking confiscated treasure from captured pirates and concealing its existence from Rome. Emperor Maximian condemned him to death, but before he could be executed, Carausius revolted against Rome and declared himself Emperor of Britain and northern Gaul. He ruled the Britannic Empire as an independent state from 286 to 293 A.D. His coins were the first Roman coins struck in London.

In 293, the western Caesar Constantius Chlorus retook some of the territories in Gaul. Carausius’ treasurer Allectus assassinated him and appointed himself emperor, but when Constantius launched a full invasion to reclaim Britain in 296 A.D., Allectus died in the battle and the Britannic Empire was no more.

The East West Rail (EWR) service will run between Oxford and Cambridge, but before construction begins, archaeologists will excavate 6,000 trial trenches 164 feet long, before any permit will be granted. What they find in the test trenches will determine the Environmental Impact Assessment and the ultimate design of the railway. The program is expected to take two years.

Update: shackled men in mass grave were native Athenians

A new study of the remains of men discovered with iron shackles on their wrist in a mass grave in Athens, Greece, in 2016 has revealed that they were Athenian locals, not invaders or immigrants.

The mass grave was one of three, dubbed the “Esplanada,” that were found in an excavation of the Phaleron necropolis, in use from the 8th to the 5th century B.C. Pottery found inside the grave dates it to between 675 and 650 B.C. The bodies of 79 adult men, all young and healthy, all killed at the same time by the same method, so a deliberate execution rather than a battle, were discovered arms above their heads shackled at the wrists. They had been laid out in three orderly rows and buried with respect.

In the decade since the discovery, there has been much debate on who these men may have been and why they were executed. One possibility was that they were the noble youths who joined the failed coup of Cylon of Athens in 632 B.C., but the radiocarbon dates don’t quite fit. Another possibility was a mass execution of criminals at the dawn of state-enforced judicial power in Athens.

Researchers from Arizona State University’s Center for Bioarchaeological Research recently sought to answer some of the questions using strontium isotope analysis.

Strontium is absorbed into teeth from local food and water during childhood, leaving a chemical signature tied to where a person grew up. By comparing that signature to known local values, researchers can tell whether someone spent their early years near where they were later buried.

The team tested samples from 66 of the men in the Esplanada grave, along with 97 other individuals buried elsewhere at Phaleron. The results showed that nearly all of them, about 97 percent of the men in the mass grave, had local origins.

That figure closely matched the broader Phaleron population, where about 96 percent of those tested were also local.

These results confirm that the individuals interred in the Esplanada were killed by their neighbors, and that they had no significant differences in geographic background. The homogeneity of the results throughout the necropolis support the argument that Attica in the Archaic period was still insular with limited migration, even though the wider Aegean area was seeing increasing interaction and population movement.

5th c. B.C. grave with wrestler coins found in Aspendos

An excavation in the ancient city of Aspendos, Turkey, has uncovered a cist tomb in the Eastern Necropolis dating to between the last quarter of the 5th century B.C. and the 4th century B.C. Grave goods buried inside the tomb include silver staters that depict pairs of wrestlers.

The necropolis was discovered on a street that goes up the hill from the eastern defensive walls of the city towards the 2nd century Roman theater, one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the former Roman Empire. The tomb, constructed by erected flat, smooth stone slabs to form a sarcophagus-like enclosure, contained the skeletal remains of one adult, pottery and the silver coins.

Turkey’s Minister of Culture is promoting the hypothesis that the occupant was involved in sports and may even have been a wrestler himself Aspendos was famous for, but the presence of the coins is not sufficient evidence of a professional sportsman. They were minted from the 5th century B.C. through the first half of the 3rd century B.C. and display wrestlers in 16 different fight positions. The staters attest to the cultural significance of wrestling in Aspendos and were in wide use.

“There will need to be much more analysis before a positive identification of the body as a wrestler can be determined,” Sarah E. Bond, a historian at the University of Iowa who was not involved in the discovery, told Live Science. For example, signs of a broken and healed nose could indicate the person was an athlete.

“Coins alone cannot indicate this was a Classical era Greek wrestler,” Bond said, because “these coins were numerous and used as payment by the entire populace, not by wrestlers alone.”

Roman Republic-era shipwreck with hundreds of amphorae found off Sicily

A Roman Republic-era shipwreck carrying approximately 500 amphorae has been discovered off the coast of Sicily. It dates to between the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C.

A report from two spear fishermen led the Carabinieri cultural heritage division and Sicilian heritage officials to the site three nautical miles off the coast of Mazaro del Vallo in western Sicily where divers spotted a field of amphorae at a depth of 46 meters (151 feet). The amphorae are primarily of the Dressel 1A type, large two-handled vessels widely typically used to transport wine in the second and first centuries B.C. They were manufactured in central Italy — Etruria, Lazio and south to Campania — and shipped throughout the Mediterranean trade routes. There are also Lamboglia 2 type from northern Africa, and one Neo-Punic type.

The amphora field is approximately 21 meters (69 feet) long, six meters (19’8″) wide and two meters (6’7″) deep. Divers also located two anchor stocks made of lead and a third lead object that may be part of a lead pipe.

The wreck … was described by Italy’s culture minister, Alessandro Giuli, as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years”.

Giuli said the wreck offered “precious fragments of our history” and provided further evidence of the trade routes and exchanges that made the Mediterranean “a crossroads of civilisations”. […]

Over the coming months, Sicily’s superintendency of the sea is expected to carry out a new phase of scientific documentation and research at the site. Archaeologists will seek to establish more precisely the date of the wreck, the origin and intended destination of its cargo, and the condition of the surviving material, while also drawing up measures to protect what officials have described as a site of exceptional archaeological significance.

Sacred “talking drum” looted by France returned to Ivory Coast

A hundred and ten years after it was looted by French troops, the Djidji Ayokwe, a “talking drum” sacred to the Ébrié (Atchan) people of Ivory Coast has been welcomed home in a ceremony timed to coincide with country’s national independence day, August 7th.

On Friday, it was carried in a military parade through the Yopougon district of Abidjan, before continuing on to the village of Adjame, where it was made.

The black, white and red instrument was transported in a glass-fronted case on a large, decorated float and welcomed by Culture Minister Francoise Remarck, traditional leaders and hundreds of local residents.

A dozen people performed a libation ceremony, pouring a few drops of liquid onto the ground as an offering to their ancestors.

“A nation cannot develop if it doesn’t preserve its memory and promote its heritage,” said Adjame mayor Farikou Soumahoro.

He said he felt “deep emotion and great pride”.

“We want to see the drum with our own eyes so we can truly believe it belongs to us,” 69-year-old villager Jacqueline Akrebie told AFP.

Carved from hard native iroko wood, the Djidji Ayokwe is slit drum 3.3 meters (10’10”) long and weighing 430 kilos (948lb). It is not just a musical instrument, it was a culturally and religiously significant means of communication, hence “talking drum.” It could be heard from great distances, more than 10 miles away, and was used to warm of danger, as a clarion call to battle or to call people to important ceremonial invents. France declared Ivory Coast a French colony in 1893 and dispatched troops inland to establish outposts and French settlers. Native Ivorians were subjected to forced conscription for work in mines, on plantations and to serve in the military. Djidji Ayokwe was used to alert villagers that conscription forces were coming.

When France sent a punitive expedition to quash resistance in 1916, the drum was deliberately confiscated to assert colonial dominance over the Ébrié people. It was sent to France where it was absorbed into the national collection and placed on display at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris which was so overloaded with looted cultural artifacts from France’s colonial conquests that the Djidji Ayokwe was just one of many. It was moved to the Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac Museum in 2006.

The official handover between the Ivory Coast’s Minister of Culture, Françoise Remarck, and France’s Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, took place at the Quai Branly Museum in February. The drum was shipped to Abidjan in March, where it was welcomed by traditional Ebrie leaders and dancers but it was packed in a wooden crate. It was not actually seen in public until it made its grand ceremonial entrance on Friday.

UNESCO played a key role in the negotiations for the drum’s return, and has also put up $100,000 for its preservation and to spread the word about its return. Now that it has had its official welcoming ceremony, it will go on display at the Musée des Civilizations de Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan which has been renovated specifically so it can properly accommodate this great cultural treasure.
