Unlooted brick grave found in Roman necropolis in Croatia

Archaeological surveys performed as part of a reconstruction of the city market of Vinkovci, eastern Croatia, has unearthed a rare unlooted brick grave in a Roman-era necropolis. Out of more than 200 brick-built burials discovered in the area of the ancient city’s northern necropolis over the years, only two have been discovered intact and unlooted.

The city market area is known to have bordered the necropolis, so a preventative excavation was ordered before construction. This spring, archaeologists have unearthed 44 graves, but last Tuesday they found the first one that had not been looted in antiquity.

When the brick lined and topped tomb was opened, archaeologists found a skeleton that was nearly complete and in excellent condition. They were able to determine the skeletal remains belonged to an adult man between 40 and 45 years old at the time of death. Only two grave goods were found with him: an iron object by his right foot and a fragment of bronze on the right shoulder. Archaeologists don’t yet know what the objects were. They may have been part of his funerary clothing or something used for the burial rites.

The Vinkovci area has been continuously inhabited for over 8,000 years prompting local authorities to declare it “the oldest city in Europe.” Known as Cibalae, it was populated by Illyrian people when Rome conquered the province and was granted municipal rights by the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 A.D.), making its official name Municipium Aelium Cibalae. That changed to Colonia Aurelia Cibalae when it was granted status of a colony by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, aka Emperor Caracalla (r. 196-217 A.D.), in the early 3rd century A.D. It was an important center of trade linking the eastern and western empire, and bears the distinction of having been the birthplace of two emperors: brothers Valentinian I (r. 364-375) and Valens (364-378). They are the only Roman emperors born in what is now Croatia.

More of finely detailed Zile mosaic uncovered

Excavation of a high-quality 2nd century mosaic in Tokat, nothern Turkey, that was seized by authorities last year after looters live-streamed themselves illegally excavating it, has revealed a finely-detailed figure that some are comparing to the iconic Gypsy Girl mosaic in Zeugma.

The mosaic was discovered in the courtyard of a vineyard house. Police raided the site last May after receiving a tipoff to the looting activity that had been so stupidly but so helpfully posted on the internet. The looters had already arranged to sell it abroad on the black market before they were done excavation, but the Provincial Gendarmerie Command foiled their plans and archaeologists began to carry out official excavations.

The mosaic is a large rectangle with multiple panels of geometric and figural designs employing a variety of techniques including opus vermiculatum and opus tessellatum. A female figure inscribed “ΤΡΥΦΗ” (Tryphe), the Greek word for “luxury” or “abundance” suggests an obvious interpretation that the floor decoration was meant to emphasize the luxuriousness of the surroundings. However, now that more of the panel has been exposed, you can see the labrys, the double-headed axe that was a symbol of the Great Goddess going back to prehistory in Anatolia, in each of the four corners of the panel. The figure is flanked by two mandorla (almond) or pointed oval shapes that in antiquity was a symbol of new life, fertility and the junction of the spiritual and the physical world.

The structure that housed the mosaic appears to have performed a social function rather than having been a private luxury villa, but what that function may have been has not yet been determined. The area was an important center for the Cult of Cybele, which could have a connection to the labrys designs, but the newly uncovered figure appears to be a nereid or an Oceanus. The face has green hair and long, thin horns (perhaps the stylized crab or lobster claws seen in depictions of Oceanus). A curled fish tail is visible at the side of its reclining body.

The vineyard house where the mosaic was found is located a few hundred feet from the site of a Roman amphitheater in the ancient city of Zela. Zela is famous as the place where Julius Caesar declared “Veni, vidi, vici” after his swift defeat of Pharnaces II, King of Pontus, in 47 B.C. The excavation of the mosaic and of the theater continue, and archaeologists believe their proximity will lend new insight into Zela’s urban design, cultural and religious practices.

Viking gold bangle hoard found in Denmark

A Viking Age hoard of six solid gold bracelets has been found on the Himmerland peninsula of northeastern Jutland, Denmark. The design of the bracelets identifies them as a Scandinavian type dating to the late Viking period, ca. 900-1000 A.D., but most of the known examples are silver. Gold ones are much more rare, and with a total weight of 762.5 grams, this is the third largest Viking gold find ever made in Denmark.

The first two bracelets were discovered by accident by a local resident. They were peeking out of the soil by a field road in a wooded area near Rold. He submitted them to the archaeological department at the Museums of North Jutland for danefæ assessment, Denmark’s version of treasure trove. (All archaeological objects of historical importance found in the soil are by Danish law state property and must be declared to the authorities.)

Recognizing the objects as rare gold bangles from the Viking period, archaeologists returned to the find site to investigate further. A metal detector scan of the wider area uncovered one more gold bangle in the same spot where the first two were found, and then three more of them about 50 feet away.

“Gold in the Viking Age was concentrated among the absolute elite of society, and that is precisely why finds of this type are extremely rare. The fact that two gold bracelets are found in the upper layers of the soil and without the use of a metal detector, and that four others subsequently turn up during an archaeological survey of the area, makes the find quite extraordinary in a Danish context,” says Torben Sarauw and continues:

“The find includes gold bracelets with both twisted and smooth shapes, which together testify to a highly specialized goldsmith’s craft, which also helps to make the find something quite special.”

Three of the rings are twisted from two rods, one of which has inlaid thin gold wire and a knob-shaped closure, while the others are smooth rings made of solid rod or wire. Several are finished with characteristic wrapped closures – so-called running knots – and one ring also carries a smaller, similar ring.

One bangle is distinguished by flat-hammered, joined ends decorated with a zigzag pattern and triangles.

All six of the pieces are intact and in excellent condition. They were not just valuable in monetary terms, but also as unmistakable symbols of status and power. At the time when these bracelets were made, Denmark was beginning to unite into a single unified kingdom, as broadcast by Harald Bluetooth in runes on the Jelling Stone around 965 A.D. They may have been gifts given to reward loyalty and encourage alliances between elites. With six of them buried together, they were likely deliberately deposited for ritual purposes.

The find site is on private land and the exact location is being kept private. The archaeological examination of the place is now complete and the gold bangles are being analyzed, documented and conserved by experts. When initial cleaning and conservation is finished, the objects will be transferred to the National Museum.

Hiker finds 6th c. gold sword fitting

A hiker enjoying his morning constitutional in Sandnes, Norway, discovered a rare 6th century gold sword scabbard fitting. One of only 18 similar examples found in Northern Europe, the intricately decorated artifact is so rare, the sword it was mounted on had to have belonged to a member of the regional elite, likely a local chieftain, during the Migration Period.

The hiker found the fitting at the base of a hill named Riaren where a tree that had fallen years earlier caught his eye. He poked at a mound under the roots with a stick and suddenly saw the glint of gold. It was a small rectangle, 6 cm long by 2 cm wide (2.4 x .8 inches), weighing an unexpectedly heavy 33 grams (1.2 oz).

The ornamentation consists of a stylized animal motif created in looped and knotted gold ribbons with finely beaded gold threads overlaid on some of the lines. This filigree required a high degree of skill and is rare in works from the period. While the surface is very worn, it’s possible to make out two animals face each other in profile, one with the head against the bottom edge, the other with the head against the top edge. Additional animal figures can be made out on the back of a bent part of the fitting. These ribbon-shaped zoomorphic designs date the piece to the first half of the 6th century.

This is the third elite artifact found in the marshes at the base of Riaren. A silver necklace with gold decorations was unearthed during ploughing in the 19th century, and a large Roman bronze cauldron manufactured on the Rhine around 300 A.D. was found on a farm in 1907. All three are believed to have been deliberately deposited as offerings to the gods in hard times.

[Archaeologist Håkon Reiersen] at the Archaeological Museum in Stavanger believes that the gold treasure was buried in a rock crevice for religious reasons. It may have been an offering to the gods sometime in the 6th century.

In the year 536, Norway and the Nordic countries may have been hit by a disaster after a major volcanic eruption in Central America. The result may also have been a severe cooling for several years. Several sources in Europe describe the event. In the northern hemisphere, temperatures probably dropped by several degrees. Summers became short and cold. Crops failed for several years in a row. Perhaps half the people here died.

A lot of gold was offered to the gods at this time. People probably left valuable objects as offerings in the hope of better times. “By sacrificing such magnificent objects to the gods, the leaders at Hove confirmed their status and power,” says Reiersen.

The area around Hove in Rogaland was a center of the new warrior elite who conquered the ancient tribal communities of the region during the Roman Iron Age and early Migration Period. The warriors were seasoned serving as auxilia (mercenaries) in the Roman legions starting in the 2nd century A.D., and some of them moved north after they were discharged, using the unit organization they had learned under Rome and their military might to overpower the Scandinavian tribes and claim their fertile agricultural land.

They would seize existing farms, with the leader taking the largest, most central one and his men taking other ones nearby. They built new structures modeled after the layout of Roman military camps and forced the tribes to work the land for them, and to generate saleable goods like iron implements, fur and whale oil. This was a key period of transition from the early model of tribal communities to local chieftains and then to kingdoms.

Early Botticelli masterpiece to stay in UK

A rare early work by Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli has been acquired by the Klesch Collection in London after an export bar was placed on the masterpiece in 2025. It will now go on public display for the first time in 80 years at the Ashmolean Museum. The last time it was exhibited, at the City Museum and Art Gallery in Birmingham in 1945, it was attributed to the master’s workshop, but the current scholarship and new imaging studies show complexity and detail in the preparatory drawing evident in known autograph works by the master himself.

The Virgin and Child Enthroned was painted around 1470, early in the carrer of Mariano Filipepi, aka Sandro Botticelli (ca. 1445–1510). It depicts the Virgin seated on a throne with the Christ Child on her knee. They sit under an architectural canopy with gilded columns and marble inlays along the arch. The checkered marble floor recedes under the Virgin’s feet to a one point perspective confirmed by imaging investigations that revealed the underlying drawings and perspective lines. The composition is similar in style to Botticelli’s Sant’Ambrogio altarpiece currently in the Uffizi, particularly the design of the Child and the position of the Virgin’s hands holding him. Art historians believe the Virgin and Child Enthroned was also an altarpiece, albeit on a smaller scale, intended for a more intimate private chapel.

By the early 19th century, it was in the oratory of the Convent of San Giuliano in Florence. After the Napoleonic suppression of the convent in 1808, the property was bought by the Calasanz monastic order and the painting was then moved to the chapel of a convalescent home for sick brothers of the order in a village outside of Florence. The property, including the painting, was inherited by the Graziani family and in 1903 Giovanni Magherini Graziani sold it to Florence art dealer Elia Volpi. She sold it to heiress, philanthropist and art collector Harriet Loyd-Lindsay, Baroness Wantage, in 1904, and Virgin and Child Enthroned moved to England.

Lady Wantage’s famed collection was largely dispersed after her death in 1920, the most important works sold at Sotheby’s in 1945, but this Madonna by Botticelli was kept by her descendants in Betterton House, Berkshire, until they put it up for sale in 2024. The painting was published, but only known from black and white photos and when it was mentioned its location was even listed incorrectly. The sale spurred new research, material analysis, X-rays and infrared reflectography imaging that reclaimed the work as a masterpiece of international significance.

It was sold at auction at Sotheby’s London on December, 4, 2024 for a final sale price of £10 million ($12.6 million), blasting past the presale estimate of £2-3 million. There are very few works by Botticelli in the United Kingdom and this one is not only of exceptional importance due to its early date, but also due to its relevance to the history of Old Master collecting in the country. Because of these factors, when a foreign buyer won the auction and applied for an export license, the UK’s Minister for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism imposed a temporary export ban in 2025. The Klesch Collection stepped up to the plate and was able acquire the painting for the nation.

Evidence of prehistoric copper mining found in high-altitude Pyrenees cave

Excavations from 2021 to 2023 at Cave 338 in the eastern Pyrenees in Spain near the border with France uncovered well-defined archaeological layers of human occupation in phases from the early 5th millennium B.C. to the late 1st millennium B.C. At above 7,333 feet (2,235 meters) above sea level, it’s the highest-altitude cave with sustained prehistoric human occupation in the Pyrenees.

Archaeologists unearthed four layers of occupation: a thin top layer with a few artifacts from historical periods indicating it was barely used, an oldest layer consisting solely of charcoal fragments and two middle layers with dense remains of combustion pits, animal bones, ceramic vessels and an extraordinary assemblage of green mineral fragments believed to be malachite.

Almost 200 pieces of green stone fragments were found alongside charcoal in 23 combustion pits. Malachite is not native to the cave so must have been transported there. Researchers believe it was brought to the cave to convert the mineral into copper. Heating malachite breaks it down into carbon dioxide and copper oxide. Adding charcoal then releases the carbon dioxide and leave a nugget of copper behind. Many of the fragments were This is one of the earliest archaeological contexts documenting prehistoric high altitude copper mining in Europe.

“Many of these fragments are thermally altered, while other materials in the cave are not, which clearly suggests that fire played an important role in their processing and that there was a deliberate intention behind it,” said Dr Julia Montes-Landa of the University of Granada, co-author. “In other words, they weren’t burned by accident.”

The hearths cut across each other, indicating that the visitors reused this space frequently, but are still distinct, which suggests that those visits were separated by plenty of time. Radiocarbon dating puts the hearth found in the second layer at about 3,000 years old, while the hearths in the third layer are around 5,500 to 4,000 years old.

The excavation also uncovered the remains of at least one child and jewelry. A finger bone and a baby tooth from a child around 11 years of age were found in the third layer. It’s not currently possible to determine if the two came from the same child, but they do indicate the site was used for burials and there may be more to be found deeper in the cave. A shell pendant and a brown bear tooth pendant dating to around the second millennium B.C. were found in the second layer. There are comparable shell pendants known from prehistoric sites in Catalonia, which suggests ties between communities or shared cultural traditions, while the bear tooth is a rarity that may have been found in the cave or environs.

“For a long time, high-mountain environments were seen as marginal, places prehistoric communities passed through occasionally,” said Prof Carlos Tornero of the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution, lead author of the article in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology. “But we found a really rich archaeological sequence, including multiple combustion structures and a very large number of green mineral fragments. We can’t say exactly how long people stayed each time, but the repeated use of the space and the density of remains suggest occupations that were short to medium in duration, but happening again and again over long periods of time.”

The study has been published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology and can be read in its entirety here.

Ptolemaic circular bath, Roman villa found in Alexandria

An excavation in the Moharam Bek district of Alexandria, Egypt, has uncovered the remains of a rare circular public bath from the Ptolemaic era and a Roman-era villa with intricate mosaic floors. These findings shed new light on the urban development of Alexandria from the Ptolemaic period through the Roman era and into the Byzantine period, and redraw the map of the city.

The Moharam Bek district was the southeastern sector of the ancient city, an area that has not been extensively excavated before now. The discoveries confirm that the area was still inside the walls of the ancient city into the Byzantine era before later changes in the city’s urban fabric marginalized the neighborhood.

The circular bath takes the classical tholos form, characterized by a ring of columns that supported a domed or conical roof. In ancient Greece, these structures were intended for a variety of functions, both secular and religious, but public baths are exceedingly rare.

The villa had a small plunge pool fed by an advanced water management system. A variety of mosaic techniques were found decorating the floors of the bath and the villa, including fine examples of surviving sections of opus tessellatum and opus sectile, emphasizing the diversity of artistic workshops in Ptolemaic and Roman Alexandria.

Over the months of excavation, the team recovered important moveable artifacts as well as the architectural remains. The most notable finds were marble statues of deities including Bacchus and Asclepius, god of health, headless statue bodies with finely sculpted draping and statue heads with surviving stone eye inlays and polychrome point. One of the decapitated heads matches one of the bodies.

The artifacts are currently undergoing preliminary restoration before they are transferred to specialized laboratories. When conservation is complete, a selection of the most important pieces will go on display at the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria.

Roman sailor’s gravestone found in New Orleans repatriated to Italy

The 2nd century grave marker of a Roman naval soldier found in a New Orleans back yard has been repatriated to Italy. The inscribed marble slab was officially returned to Italy in a ceremony in Rome on Wednesday, April 29th. Other artifacts, including a large Etruscan urn from the 7th century B.C., Greek pottery, and Egyptian statuary, were repatriated at the same ceremony.

Tulane University anthropologist Daniella Santoro and her husband Aaron Lorenz found the stone last year while doing yard work at their historic shotgun house in New Orlean’s Carrolton neighborhood. They reached out to archaeologists and Latin experts, including Tulane University classical studies professor Susann Lusnia, to research its history and translate the inscription. The text identified the deceased as Sextus Congenius Verus, soldier of the fleet of Misenum, an inscription matching one recorded as missing from the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia after World War II.

Lusnia traveled to Civitavecchia in person to investigate the mystery of how this slab went from its find site, to the local museum, then across an ocean to a New Orleans back yard. The previous homeowner, reading the story of the find in the press, solved the last part of the mystery — her grandfather had served in Italy during World War II, married an Italian woman and brought her home to New Orleans. Presumably the slab came with them.

Santoro, Lusnia, other experts and cultural heritage organizations worked together with the Civitavecchia museum on how best to get the grave marker back to the museum. Due to the complexities inherent in the repatriation process, they decided to bring in the FBI’s Art Crime Team. They took custody of the funerary marker in November of last year while the FBI in Rome coordinated the return of the slab and a number of other significant ancient artifacts with Italian authorities.

Professor Susann Lusnia:

“It is especially gratifying to know that this object will soon be home in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia. I think that those of us in New Orleans who experienced Hurricane Katrina understand the joy that accompanies the return of things that we thought were lost forever.”

“Cultural heritage is worth protecting … Every object returned builds trust and international cooperation, which I think is especially important now,” she added.

Neolithic beaver bone pit reveals early fur hunting

A 7,000-year-old bone pit containing the skeletal remains of at least 12 beavers likely hunted for their fur has been discovered near Alsleben, Germany.

The early Neolithic pit was discovered by a team from the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology (LDA) Saxony-Anhalt in advance of high-voltage line construction in 2024. It was located above the Saale River in an area known to have had Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age settlements. The excavation uncovered numerous remains from the Neolithic-era occupation — postholes, burials, storage pits — including one small pit less than 32 inches in diameter that was packed with animals bones. Archaeologists knew at first glance that beaver were among them, because of their distinctive orange teeth. A flint object found in the fill of the pit suggested a Neolithic date.

The bone pit was removed in a soil block for careful excavation in laboratory conditions. The bones were radiocarbon dated and found to date to between 4935 and 4787 B.C. when the Stroke-Ornamented Ware Culture occupied the area and much of Central Europe.

While archaeological evidence has been found that beaver meat was eaten at this time and later, that was not the purpose of this hunt. There are no cut marks on the bones typically left by butchering and had the carcasses been consumed, the skeletal remains would be complete when they were discarded.

The bones are exceptionally well preserved and mostly unfragmented. Based on the skulls already uncovered, it can be assumed that the remains of at least twelve individuals were disposed of in the pit. The absence of some bones and the lack of anatomical coherence among the existing remains indicate that the animals were already skeletonized at the time of deposition. Various age classes, from quite young (1 year old) to old animals (over eight years old), can be identified based on the bones.

Hunting beavers along the Saale River in Alsleben was likely possible during the Neolithic. The concentration of bones in a single find suggests a unique event. Presumably, the animals were hunted for their fur, skinned, and the carcasses left until they decomposed, possibly on a garbage heap. The individual bones were later disposed of in the pit. The Alsleben find thus not only points to specialized hunting strategies in the early Neolithic period, but also allows us to draw conclusions about clothing at that time, which we can imagine to have been quite elaborate.

Largest Viking coin hoard in Norwegian history found

An assemblage of more than 3,000 silver coins, the largest Viking-era coin hoard ever found in Norway, has been discovered in Østerdalen. Large coin hoards are extremely rare in Norway and one of this size is without parallel on the archaeological record. The second largest, found in the 1830s, contained 1,849 coins. The third largest and the last to be found before this one in 1950 and contained just 964 coins.

The first 19 coins were found by metal detectorists Rune Sætre and Vegard Sørlie in a field near Rena on April 10th. The coins were scattered in the plough layer of extensively cultivated land, likely because the original container of the single deposit was destroyed by agricultural activity. The finders, who have both taken courses offered by the Innlandet County Municipal council for metal detectorists, suspected they might have been part of a hoard, so they stopped scanning and contacted county archaeologists.

Dubbed the Mørstad hoard after the farm where the coins were found, they range in date from 980s to the 1040s, a turbulent period in Norway’s history when Viking warriors brought treasure home from their raids abroad. So far most of them are from England and Germany, with a smaller number of Danish and Norwegian coins in the mix. There are coins minted by Cnut the Great, at various times king of England, Denmark and Norway, Æthelred the Unready of England, Holy Roman Emperor Otto III and Harald Hardrada of Norway.

Foreign coins Norway’s main currency until the reign of Hardrada who was the first king to establish a national mint in the country after his return from a visit to Byzantium in 1045. Based on the dates of the coins, the hoard was deposited around 1047, the very beginning of this important transition, and there are pieces of hacksilver (fragments of brooches, ingots, other silver objects that were cut off and used as currency based on their weight).

Excavations are ongoing and plenty of coins are still being found. For a while coins were being unearthed at a rate of 200 a day. That seems to be slowing now, but yesterday the count was 150, so who knows what the final number will be. The site is currently under guard to keep the curious and/or greedy from messing with the archaeological context. All of the recovered coins are documented as they are found and then transported to the coin cabinet of the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo for further study.

[Museum of Cultural History coin expert coin expert Svein Harald] Gullbekk estimates that the field and surrounding area will continue to be investigated for a couple more seasons.

“When you turn the soil, additional objects often emerge, including coins that may have been missed during earlier excavations,” he says. “It will also be exciting to see whether there are any traces of building structures nearby, whether there was a farm here or other man-made structures.”

Two rare Anglo-Saxon Agnus Dei coins found in Denmark

Two rare Late Anglo-Saxon coins have been found by metal detectorists in Denmark, one near Løgumkloster and one at Kåstrup in Thy. They were discovered as part of routine archaeological surveys in Jutland performed by volunteers in collaboration with Danish cultural heritage authorities and have now entered the collections of the National Museum of Denmark.

There are fewer than 30 examples of the English Agnus Dei type coin minted around 1009 by King Æthelred the Unready in the hope that God would express his approval of his iconography on the coinage by helping England’s fight against the Viking invaders. The fact that majority of the Agnus Dei coins known have been found in Scandinavia suggests the petition was rejected.

The coins differ significantly from contemporary English coins, which bear the portrait of the king and a cross on the reverse. The Lamb of God coins, on the other hand, are marked on one side with a lamb pierced by a cross – a Christian symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The lamb stands on a tablet with the Greek letters alpha and omega, symbolizing that God is the beginning and end of all. On the other side of the coin is the ascending dove of the Holy Spirit.

After more than 150 years of constant attacks, England had a generation of relief from Viking invaders under the reigns of Æthelred’s uncle Eadwig (r. 955-959) and father Edgar (959-975). Edgar had been a strong supporter of the monasteries, giving them large grants and forcing lay landowners to give them their land. When Æthelred ascended the throne in 978, he was a child, no more than 12 years old, but when he reached his majority, he dismissed his regents and changed course, chipping away at ecclesiastical privilege and property, giving church lands to his supporters.

But the Vikings came back. Small raids in the 980s led to a major attack on Ipswich in 991 and an invading force that defeated English defenders over and over. Æthelred had to buy them off with tribute, but they returned in 993, and the king had to pay an even bigger price for a (temporary) cessation of hostilities. The Danish fleet returned in 997, and this time there was no tribute sufficient to stop the raids. He was so desperate after five years of attacks that Æthelred ordered the massacre of all Danish men in England on St. Brice’s Day (November 13, 1002). It didn’t help. When the largest army yet, led by Thorkell the Tall, landed in Sandwich in 1009, the English defenses were routed. Cities paid their own tributes to get out of the line of fire, and in 1011, England paid a massive tribute of 48,000 pounds to free Canterbury and the captured Archbishop (he was killed anyway).

Seeing the return of so much death and destruction at Viking hands as retribution for his sins, Æthelred repented of the anti-church actions of his early reign. He restored the lands and privileges he had removed, and in the 980s began minting coins featuring religious images (the hand of God, crosses) instead of his stylized portraiture. The Agnus Dei type, portraying the Lamb of God with a cross on the obverse and the dove of the Holy Spirit on the reverse, was minted in 1009 in response to Thorkell the Tall’s invasion.

The Vikings loved the religious coin types. Instead of invoking God’s favor and protection to repel Viking attacks, these types of coins ended up being highly sought after by the invading armies. They appear in Scandinavian hoards in large amounts, often pierced to be were worn as pendants. The plunder and tribute extracted from England had a powerful effect on the currency system in Denmark.

“The Danish mint is inspired and based on the well-ordered English coinage system. The Vikings quickly discovered that it was much smarter to use coins than to cut silver into pieces when trading,” says [National Museum curator] Gitte Tarnow Ingvardson.

Even the Lamb of God coins were imitated here at home. The Viking kings Canute the Great and his son Hardeknud minted coins with the same two motifs, as did Sweyn Estridsen, who ended up playing an important role in the establishment of the Danish church organization.

The two Agnus Dei coins are now being cleaned and conserved. They will be studied further and subjected to scientific analysis to find out more information about their origins in England and deposition in Jutland.
