Biscuit tins became a thing in Britain after 1860 when the first time the Refreshment Houses Act and the Treaty of Commerce allowed printed paper labels to be affixed to food and beverages. Once colorful, eye-catching labels could be added to food packaging, new processes were developed to make it easier. In 1877, offset lithography was patented that made printing directly onto tin containers of various shapes possible.

Decorative tinware took off, reaching its pinnacle of intricate, creative design before World War I. Lewis Carrol got on the biscuit tin trade in 1891 when manufacturers Barringer, Wallis and Manners contacted him with the idea of making an Alice in Wonderland-themed tin. It would be printed with polychrome scenes based on the illustrations by John Tenniel for Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass and What Alice found there, the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland published in 1871. The original illustrations were printed in black and white, so the idea of a vividly colored version decorating a cookie tin seemed a can’t-miss idea to appeal to children and their parents who had grown up with the books.

Barringer, Wallis and Manners created a tin with a rectangular base , straight sides and rounded corners. The sides and outside of the lid were printed with the labelled illustrations : The Red King Asleep, The Battle Between the Red and White Knights, Alice the White King and the Messenger, Alice and the Fawn, Alice and the Red Queen, Tweedledee & Tweedledum, Humpty Dumpty Offering his Hand to All and The White Knight Sliding Down the Poker.

Tenniel had illustrated Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and found Carroll a micromanaging tyrant, so much so that he refused Carroll’s first request that he illustrate the sequel, and only agreed after he received assurances that he could work at his own pace. Barringer, Wallis and Manners soon found themselves on the business end of Carroll’s control freakery and whiplash-inducing changeability.

The initial offer was Carroll would receive 50 gift tins. He declined on the grounds that it was too many and he’d look like a sellout. Then he changed his mind and wrote them that actually 50 wasn’t enough and he needed 100 to give away to his friends and family, including Alice Liddell, model for Alice in the books. Then he got mad that they included a note that the tin was compliment of “Charles Dodgson,” exposing his real name to the factory workers. Then he got mad that the tin came with a W.R. Jacob & Co label on the inside of the lid. They were the makers of the biscuits so naturally they added a label to that effect, but Carroll’s preferred cookies were Huntley and Palmers so he was offended.

Then he did something so deranged, the poor tin makers must have wanted to choke him. He insisted that the rest of the tins should be sent to his recipients WITHOUT ANY BISCUITS INSIDE. Yes, he was sending gift biscuit tins to friends and family, many of them children, so they would open the lid with all the enthusiasm a kid can muster for cookies, only to find they’d been sent an empty container.

Today the Alice biscuit tins are prized collector’s items, found in museums including the V&A, the Guildford Museum and the Museum of Oxford. One came up for auction on the 17th with a pre-sale estimate of £600 – £900. It sold for £2900 even though there’s small but noticeable areas of damage to the lithography. The story of Lewis Carroll vs. the biscuit tin has made them all the more desirable.

3rd c. pithos burial found at Hadrianopolis

A pithos burial has been discovered in the ancient city of Hadrianopolis, modern-day Eskipazar in northern Turkey’s Black Sea region. It is the first example of this type of burial found in region. A coin found inside the large storage jar was minted during the reign of Roman emperor Probus (r. 276-282 A.D.), which dates the burial to the 3rd century.

Used to store large volumes of foods (grain, olives, spices, nuts, fruits) both for transport on ships or in permanent arrays on land, pithoi were so big they could also comfortably accommodate bodies and grave goods in burials. In the Hadrianopolis pithos burial, archaeologists found skeletal human remains, the coin, seven smaller pottery vessels, an oil lamp, a knife and two bone hairpins. The hairpins suggest the deceased may have been a woman.

[Professor Ersin Celikbas, head of the Archaeology Department at Karabuk University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences], said the find marks the first time a pithos tomb has been documented in Hadrianopolis and its surroundings in relation to funerary culture, making it important for understanding burial traditions in the area.

Celikbas also noted that the pottery found in the tomb included examples of Pontic Sigillata, a type of fired clay vessel associated with the Black Sea region. He said this pottery type has been found in almost all excavation areas at Hadrianopolis.

Hadrianopolis was founded by the Hittites in around 1300 B.C., but it was renamed after the Roman emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century. It was located on an important trade route between the Black Sea coast, the Aegean coast and central Anatolia.

2,700-year-old Bronze Age sword found in Poland

A Bronze Age sword has been found by a metal detectorist in the woods near Gdańsk, Poland. It is in excellent condition, covered in green patina. Archaeologists with the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments (PUOZ) dated the sword to 900-700 B.C., the late Bronze Age in Europe.

Licensed metal detectorist Marcin Wiśniewski notified the PUOZ on Monday as soon as he realized he’d found an archaeological artifact. He protected it from the rain and obscured it from view to keep it safe from any less scrupulous forest visitors. This allowed regional archaeologists to excavate the find site immediately using professional methodology.

Archaeologists later excavated the area using standard field methods. They carefully recorded the sword’s exact position before lifting it from the ground. No other artifacts were found nearby, though researchers say the weapon’s original placement still holds valuable information. The upright position suggests the sword was deliberately deposited rather than accidentally lost.

The sword measures about 60 centimeters in length and belongs to the tang-hilted type. Its narrow metal tang once held a grip made from wood, bone, or antler, materials that have long since decayed. A green patina covers the bronze blade, helping preserve decorative grooves, engraved arcs, and short crosswise lines. These features match swords produced during the fourth and fifth periods of the Bronze Age, though conservation work will confirm its exact type.

A sword of this length and high quality of decoration would have been prohibitively expensive when it was made. It had the equivalent value as a herd of cattle. Now PUOZ is determining which museum will be the proud recipient of the sword. Once its future home has been determined, it will be conserved to reveal its full decoration.

17th c. lead ingots found at offshore wind farm site

A group of three large lead ingots from a 17th century shipwreck have been discovered at the site of an offshore wind farm 75 miles off the Norfolk coast. The ingots weigh about 155 lbs apiece and were likely exports from Darbyshire mines destined for mainland Europe.

The ingots were discovered at the site of Hornsea 3 in the North Sea which when completed will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world. The seabed of the entire site is being extensively investigated before construction begins. Investigators gather detailed information from soil composition, to environmental data to marine life surveys in order to identify sensitive areas and potential hazards.

Marine investigators discovered the ingots at a depth of 130 feet while scanning the bed for unexploded ordnance. Instead of bombs, they found three lead ingots stacked in their original position on the ship. The wreck itself was gone, with only a few surviving timbers visible under the ingots.

Each ingot is stamped with a different mark – ‘IS’, ‘EB’ and ‘H’ – similar to ingots found on the 1664 wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman Kennemerland off the Shetland Islands. The Hornsea 3 vessel might also have been from the Netherlands.

At the time England produced vast quantities of lead, in particular from Derbyshire and Peak District mines, with much of it shipped across the North Sea from Hull and London to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The wreck found at Hornsea 3 lies directly on the Hull-Netherlands route.

Lead has been mined in Derbyshire since the Roman period. The Peak District mines were the primary lead producers in Europe during the Middle Ages. By the 17th century, the mining and selling lead was Britain’s second most important trade (wool was number one). It was used in every building from roof to window to pipes, and the raw ore formed into ingots for the export market.

The Hornsea 3 ingots will be housed at the Peak District Mining Museum in Matlock, Derbyshire, which is dedicated to the region’s millennia-old mining history.

Amber pendant with microcarved portrait of Queen Elizabeth I

An extremely rare amber pendant with an embedded portrait cameo of Queen Elizabeth I will be going under the hammer at Sotheby’s on July 1st. It dates to around 1600, the very end of Elizabeth’s reign. What makes the heart-shaped Baltic amber pendant so rare is the microcarved portrait of Elizabeth encased inside it. The level of detail is so exceptional it makes the pendant one of the most sophisticated amber objects in existence today.

It’s not possible to determine the material the portrait was carved out of, but based on other highly-prized amber objects from the period, it was probably made out of white amber or a compound with a high proportion of tin. A concave hollow was cut from behind into the amber heart and the portrait embedded under it. The curved surface served to magnify the image.

The painstaking technique is typical of the work of the finest amber jewelry makers in the town of Königsberg on the Baltic coast in the late 16th century. It is therefore attributed to Hans Klingenberg or Georg Schreiber, goldsmiths and amber carvers at the court of Albert Frederick, Duke of Prussia, in Königsberg between 1593 and 1648. The marked similarities with the incredibly gorgeous amber chessboard King Charles I brought to the scaffold on the day of his execution makes Georg Schreiber the leading candidate.

Carved after a 1592 engraving by Crispijn de Passe the Elder, the portrait is surrounded by an inscription that reads: ELISABET · D · G · ANG: FRAN: HIB: ET: VIR: REGI: F: D + [ELIZABETH THANKS BE TO GOD QUEEN OF ENGLAND, FRANCE, IRELAND AND VIRGINIA DEFENDER OF THE FAITH]. The same inscription frames Crispijn de Passe’s engraving. The reverse of the pendant has a cameo of a parrot or popinjay

The jewel also holds strong symbolic significance. At the time, encasing a portrait in amber was seen as a way of preserving its memory. The figure of Elizabeth I, enveloped in the golden radiance of the material, thus appears eternally preserved, as if to safeguard the memory of the Elizabethan era. On the reverse side is a depiction of a parrot, a symbol traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary and purity—a clear reference to the image of the “Virgin Queen” that Elizabeth promoted throughout her reign.

Its documented provenance goes back to the 19th century when it was acquired by the Scottish politician John Malcolm, 1st Baron Malcolm of Poltalloch, who amassed one of the most important art collections in Britain. His Old Master drawings, including works by luminaries including Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto, was so important the British Parliament gave the British Museum a grant to acquire it.

The pendant was in the Malcolm family by descent until last year when it was sold to a private collector who is now selling it at auction. The pre-sale estimate is £100,000-150,000 ($132,000-198,000).

Unique bronze votive cart found at Tartessian site

A unique bronze votive miniature cart has been unearthed at the Tartessian culture site of Casas del Turuñuelo, in Guareña, southern Spain. It is the only example of a bronze chariot like this ever discovered in the Iberian peninsula. The only comparable examples have been found at Etruscan sites in Italy. It dates to the 5th century B.C.

The cart is decorated on the front with an image of the underworld river deity Achelous. Two griffins are depicted on the sides. Two bearded Atlantes with raised arms support the cart. Excavation co-director Esther Rodríguez:

“We have found some in Etruria, such as the one in the Orvieto museum, but they are very different from the one at Turuñuelo, except for the structure: a solid bronze platform on wheels. There are some sources that mention this type of votive chariot, but this is the first time we have seen it.” Thus, possibly transported from Etruria, with a central axle system made of iron that allows the wheels to turn and a frame with decorative cordage, the chariot presents unique elements. For example, the skirt worn by the figures supporting the chariot, which harks back to the Egyptian world. Or the fact that the river deity—present in the Greek culture of the time, but also in Etruria—is sticking out its tongue.

“That’s why at first we thought it was a Gorgon [the terrifying deities of the underworld], but it isn’t, because it has horns. Until now, in fact, no Achelous had appeared with its tongue sticking out. Guiomar Pulido [another member of the excavation team] believes it may be a kind of hybrid between an Achelous and an underworld deity, because of that somewhat Dionysian expression,” the archaeologist adds.

The Bronze Age Tartessian culture (8th-4th century B.C.) at its peak occupied much of today’s western Andalusia, Extremadura and southern Portugal. It was renowned for its metalwork, influenced by Phoenician techniques and the cultural object spread throughout the Mediterranean by Phoenician traders during the Orientalizing Period (8th-7th centuries B.C.).

This is the 8th year of excavations at the Casas del Turuñuelo site. Previous campaigns discovered the largest mass sacrifice of animals in the ancient western Mediterranean and the first figural depictions of Tartessian people. This season’s dig took place in April and May and focused on the tumulus 295 feet in diameter and 20 feet high which covers a large building that was deliberately sealed and buried in the late 5th century B.C. This is the main building at the site, a sanctuary used for religious purposes that is unique on the Tartessian archaeological record.

The cart was found in a room next to the banquet room, so-called because of the remains of the final feast before the closing of the building were discovered there. Because of its location, archaeologists believe the cart was used in the banqueting rituals, perhaps to make embers or burn aromatic resins. The space also contained two bronze braziers, a cauldron and the handles of a podanipter, a foot basin that was used to wash feet before rituals and celebrations.

The excavation of the tumulus unearthed evidence of the strong Tartessian links to Mediterranean commerce during the Bronze Age. In addition to the votive cart, archaeologists uncovered ceramic, alabaster and more than 200 ivory fragments incised with mythological creatures, animals and human figures. The ivories are typical of Phoenician design, and the ceramics and alabaster were likely imported from Greece and Egypt.

Casas del Turuñuelo is in the Guadiana river valley, 30 miles from the nearest seaport. That so many high-end trade goods made it to this site in the interior of the peninsula underscores the importance of the city and the wealth of its residents.

थे। इससे उनके और बबीता के रिश्ते में भी अनबन चल रही थीं। फिर एक समय ऐसा आया, जब करिश्मा के करियर को सपोर्ट करते हुए बबीता ने 1987 में रणधीर का घर छोड़ दिया। राज कपूर की पोती होने के चलते उन्हें बिना संघर्ष फिल्मों के ऑफर मिलने लगे। 16 की उम्र में उन्होंने एक साथ कई फिल्में साइन कीं। सबसे पहले करिश्मा ने फिल्म निश्चय शूट की, जिसके लिए न उन्हें ऑडिशन देना पड़ा, न ही उनका स्क्रीन टेस्ट लिया गया। हालांकि इस फिल्म से पहले ही उनकी दूसरी फिल्म प्रेम कैदी (1991) रिलीज हो गई। पहली ही फिल्म में करिश्मा ने स्विमसूट पहना, जिससे अंकल ऋषि कपूर काफी नाराज हुए थे। फिल्म एवरेज रही, लेकिन इसके बाद करिश्मा बनीं और उनकी गिनती बॉलीवुड की टॉप एक्ट्रेसेस में होने लगी। इसी समय उनका नाम अजय देवगन से जुड़ा, लेकिन जल्द ही दोनों अलग भी हो गए। फिल्मी गलियारों में चर्चा रही कि रवीना टंडन के चलते रिश्ते में दरार आई और यही वजह रही कि करिश्मा और रवीना के फिल्मों के सेट पर अनबन और झगड़े बढ़ने लगे। पिता चाहते थे अक्षय खन्ना से हो करिश्मा की शादी करिश्मा कपूर करियर के पीक पर थीं, जब उनके पिता रणधीर कपूर ने दोस्त विनोद खन्ना से कहा था कि वो चाहते हैं कि करिश्मा की शादी उनके बेटे अक्षय खन्ना से हो। विनोद खन्ना भी इस पर विचार कर रहे थे कि तभी बबीता ने इससे साफ इनकार कर दिया। अभिषेक बच्चन को जीजू कहती थीं करीना कपूर कपूर और बच्चन परिवार हमेशा से ही करीबी रहा है। दरअसल, अमिताभ बच्चन की बेटी और अभिषेक बच्चन की बहन श्वेता की शादी, करिश्मा कपूर की बुआ ऋतु नंदा के बेटे निखिल नंदा से हुई। श्वेता-निखिल की शादी के समय जया बच्चन ने शर्त रखी कि करिश्मा को शादी के बाद फिल्मों में काम करना बंद करना होगा। बबीता इसके लिए हरगिज राजी नहीं थीं। उन्होंने ये रिश्ता तोड़ दिया। मां के कहने पर की बचपन के दोस्त संजय कपूर से शादी अभिषेक से शादी टूटी ही थी कि करिश्मा का करियर भी अनस्टेबल होने लगा। 2002 में आईं उनकी फिल्में शक्ति और रिश्ते बॉक्स ऑफिस पर एवरेज रहीं। इसी समय उनकी जिंदगी में फिर एक बार बचपन के दोस्त संजय कपूर आए। संजय की शादी 1996 में फैशन डिजाइनर नंदिता मेहतानी से हुई थी, लेकिन 2000 में उनका तलाक हो गया। एक बार दोनों की मुलाकात एक फैमिली वेडिंग में हुई। सालों बाद हुई ये मुलाकात से बचपन की यादें ताजा हो गईं। दोनों की फिर कुछ मुलाकातें हुईं और बबीता कपूर ने जल्द ही रानी कपूर से मिलकर दोनों की शादी तय कर दी। करिश्मा ने कहा था- उतार-चढ़ाव के बाद मेरे पेरेंट्स जाते थे मैं शादी कर घर बसा लूं शादी से ठीक मैंने फिल्मों में करियर बनाया। लेकिन शायद किस्मत में जो लिखा होता है, वही होता है। पिछले कुछ समय में मैंने जिंदगी में काफी उतार-चढ़ाव देखे हैं। ऐसे में मेरे माता-पिता काफी समय से चाहते थे कि मैं शादी करके अपना घर बसा लूं। अब मुझे आखिरकार वह इंसान मिल गया है, जो मेरे लिए बिल्कुल सही है।" 29 सितंबर 2003 में करिश्मा कपूर और संजय कपूर की शादी हुई। पंजाबी रीति-रिवाजों से ये शादी धूमधाम से कृष्णा राज बंगले में हुई, जिसमें इंडस्ट्री के तमाम लोग शामिल रहे। देखिए शादी की खास झलक- शादी के तुरंत बाद अचानक करिश्मा कपूर ने इंडस्ट्री से दूरी बना लीं। 2 साल बाद 2005 में करिश्मा ने बेटी समायरा और 2010 में स्कैंडल बन गई। करिश्मा ने खार पुलिस स्टेशन में पति संजय और सास सीमा के खिलाफ घरेलू हिंसा, मारपीट के आरोप में भारतीय दंड संहिता की धारा 498A और धारा 34 के तहत शिकायत दर्ज करवाई। पुलिस को दिए बयान में करिश्मा ने कहा कि उनके पति उन्हें सालों से मानसिक तौर पर प्रताड़ित कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने ये भी कहा कि शादी के ठीक बाद हनीमून पर संजय ने अपने दोस्तों से उनकी बोली लगाने को कहा और उनके साथ समय बिताने का दबाव बनाया। विरोध करने पर संजय ने हाथ भी उठाया। शिकायत में करिश्मा ने सास पर आरोप लगाते हुए कहा कि शादी के बाद सास सीमा कपूर ने उन्हें एक ड्रेस दी थी। संजय ने प्रेग्नेंसी के दौरान उन्हें वो ड्रेस पहनने को कहा, लेकिन जब वो फिट नहीं आई तो संजय ने अपनी मां से उन्हें थप्पड़ मारने को कहा। विवाद के बीच करिश्मा परिवार को छोड़कर खार स्थित घर में रहने लगीं, जो संजय कपूर के पिता सुरिंदर के नाम था। ये केस चल ही रहा था कि करिश्मा ने बांद्रा फैमिली कोर्ट में घरेलु हिंसा अधिनियम 2005 की धारा 19 के तहत एक और केस दर्ज करवाया। वकील संजोग परब ने मीडिया को दिए बयान में कहा था, इस मामले में करिश्मा की सबसे बड़ी चिंता उनके बच्चे हैं। याचिका में मांग की गई थी कि अगली सुनवाई तक बच्चों को मुंबई की सीमा से बाहर न ले जाया जाए। करिश्मा के वकील ने यह भी स्पष्ट किया था कि उन्होंने अपने लिए किसी तरह की आर्थिक सहायता की मांग नहीं की है। उनकी ओर से सिर्फ बच्चों के पालन-पोषण के लिए हर महीने 10 लाख रुपए की मांग की गई और कहा कि संजय हर महीने बच्चों को डेढ़ लाख दे रहे थे, जो अब उन्होंने बंद कर दिया है। याचिका में ये भी दावा किया गया कि संजय कपूर का दूसरी महिला से अफेयर है और वो बच्चों को भी उस महिला के साथ रखते हैं। विवाद के बीच संजय की तरफ से कहा गया कि अभिषेक से सगाई टूटने के बाद करिश्मा ने उनसे पैसों और रेपुटेशन के लिए शादी की थी। रणधीर कपूर ने कहा था- वो थर्ड क्लास आदमी है, कभी नहीं चाहता था शादी हो संजय के इस बयान पर 2016 में रणधीर कपूर ने हिंदुस्तान टाइम्स को दिए इंटरव्यू में कहा, "संजय एक थर्ड क्लास आदमी है। हर कोई जानता है कि हमारा परिवार कौन है। हम कपूर हैं और हमें किसी के पैसों के पीछे भागने की जरुरत नहीं है। भगवान ने हमें सिर्फ दौलत ही नहीं, बल्कि टैलेंट भी दिया है, जिसके सहारे हम पूरी जिंदगी आराम से जी सकते हैं।" उन्होंने आगे कहा था, "मैं कभी नहीं चाहता था कि करिश्मा की शादी संजय से हो। उसने अपनी पत्नी की कभी परवाह नहीं की। वह करिश्मा के साथ गलत व्यवहार करता रहा और दूसरी महिला के साथ रह रहा था। दिल्ली में हर कोई जानता है कि वह कैसा इंसान है। इससे ज्यादा मैं कुछ नहीं कहना चाहता।" तलाक के लिए रखी गईं कई शर्तें- 2016 में संजय कपूर और करिश्मा का तलाक हुआ और बच्चों की कस्टडी करिश्मा को मिली। तलाक के लिए कुछ शर्ते रखी गई थीं, जिनमें कहा गया था कि संजय कपूर बच्चों का पूरा खर्च उठाएंगे। बच्चों की पढ़ाई का पूरा खर्च भी संजय की जिम्मेदारी होगी। संजय जब चाहें बच्चों से मिल सकते हैं। डीएनए की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, करिश्मा कपूर को एलीमनी के लिए 70 करोड़ रुपए दिए गए थे। करिश्मा से तलाक के बाद संजय कपूर ने 2017 में प्रिया सचदेवा से तीसरी शादी की। प्रिया तलाकशुदा थीं जिन्हें पहली शादी से एक बेटी थी। संजय कपूर ने उन्हें भी अपनाया। कुछ सालों बाद प्रिया ने संजय के बेटे को जन्म दिया, जिसका नाम अजारियस रखा गया। वहीं दूसरी तरफ करिश्मा ने 2020 में ओटीटी प्लेटफॉर्म की सीरीज मेंटलहुट से एक्टिंग कमबैक किया। करिश्मा के बच्चे अक्सर पिता संजय कपूर से मिलते रहते थे और उनके परिवार के साथ समय बिताते थे। करिश्मा को भी कई मौकों पर पूर्व पति के साथ स्पॉट किया गया था। दोनों ही अपनी-अपनी जिंदगियों में व्यस्त थे कि 12 जून 2025 में अचानक दिल का दौरा पड़ने से संजय कपूर का इंग्लैंड में निधन हो गया। करिश्मा कपूर बच्चों और बहन के साथ संजय कपूर के अंतिम संस्कार में शामिल हुई थीं। देखिए (Will) पेश की, जिसमें दावा किया गया कि संजय ने अपनी पूरी संपत्ति उनके नाम कर दी थी। हालांकि, इस वसीयत को संजय कपूर की मां रानी कपूर और करिश्मा कपूर से हुए उनके दोनों बच्चों ने चुनौती दी। उनका आरोप है कि यह वसीयत फर्जी है। उसमें उनके नाम की स्पेलिंग तक लिखी गई है, जो उनके पिता कभी नहीं करते। करिश्मा कपूर के बच्चों ने ये भी दावा किया कि उनके कॉलेज की फीस तक नहीं भरी गई है। विवाद के बीच कोर्ट ने प्रिया द्वारा रखी जा रहीं बोर्ड मीटिंग को रोकने का आदेश दिया और संपत्ति फैसला आने तक फ्रीज कर दी है। फिलहाल यह मामला दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट में सुनवाई के लिए लंबित है और सुप्रीम कोर्ट तक पहुंच चुका है।

Roman shrine to Minerva found in Spanish quarry

A rare shrine to Minerva has been discovered carved into the rock of a sandstone quarry Campos del Paraíso, Spain. It dates to the 2nd century A.D.

It is a small aedicula (shrine) carved in the shape of a temple with two columns supporting a triangular pediment. The figure of the goddess was carved in the center, but the sculpture is heavily weathered and hard to make out.

“The goddess Minerva appears carved as the main figure, although erosion of the rock in this area makes it difficult to see the scene. Even so, despite its significant deterioration, its identification can be supported by the preserved volumetric and schematic composition, as well as by certain formal features still perceptible and the spatial arrangement of the relief remains,” [the study authors] point out.

Minerva is depicted in the quarry with her most common classical iconography: frontally and in a recumbent pose, standing and dressed in a long tunic or peplos , wearing a helmet and armed with a spear in her right hand, and carrying the aegis with the gorgoneion (protective symbol). Her left hand rests on an oval-shaped shield. Also visible on the shield is a little owl ( Athene noctua ), a bird symbolically associated with the goddess and an emblem of “wisdom, intelligence, and insight.”

The votive dedication inscribed below the shrine is still legible and confirms the deity worshiped at the shrine. Two lines of text read:

MINERVAE DOMINAE PLOTI / VS VIGOR CVM SVO COMITATO

Which translates to: “To Minerva Domina, (dedicates) Plotius Vigor with his entourage.”

The Plotius family was a plebian family that boasted senators and magistrates in its ranks going back to the Roman Republican era. References to Plotius family members have been found in many inscriptions in Spain. In this context, it appears Plotius Vigor was a local administrator or leader in the quarrying community. The phrase “cum suo comitato” could refer to a work crew or to a military detachment assigned to oversee the quarry area.

“The ancient quarry, transformed into a place of devotion, shows how Roman religion was not only expressed in the great urban or peri-urban sanctuaries, but also in rural and productive enclaves where the community, the workers or their promoters sought the protection of the divinity and left inscribed on the rock both their veneration of the goddess and the material memory of their vow.”

Researchers from the Don Felipe de Borbón y Grecia Mining History Museum at the Polytechnic University of Madrid have published the find in the journal MANTVA. It is in Spanish, and can be read here (pdf).

फिल्म ‘वेलकम टू द जंगल’ सिर्फ मल्टीस्टारर फिल्म नहीं, बल्कि कलाकारों के लिए यादों और रिश्तों का सफर भी रही। दैनिक भास्कर से बातचीत में अक्षय कुमार और सुनील शेट्टी ने फिल्म से जुड़े किस्से साझा किए। अक्षय ने बताया कि बड़े स्टारकास्ट के साथ काम करना पिकनिक जैसा अनुभव था, जहां शूटिंग के साथ मस्ती भी हुई। सुनील शेट्टी ने कहा कि इतने कलाकारों के साथ फिल्म बनाना आसान नहीं था, लेकिन टीम ने इसे खास बनाया। दोनों ने माना कि फिल्म खत्म होने के बाद एक-दूसरे का साथ याद आएगा। सवाल: फिल्म ‘वेलकम टू द जंगल’ से जुड़ने की सबसे बड़ी वजह क्या थी? क्या फ्रेंचाइजी, स्टारकास्ट या कुछ और? जवाब/अक्षय कुमार: सबसे बड़ी वजह यह थी कि फिल्म की कहानी नीरज वोरा ने लिखी थी। हमारे उनके साथ पुराने रिश्ते रहे हैं और हमने उनकी कई स्क्रिप्ट्स पर काम किया है। मैंने उनके साथ करीब आठ-नौ फिल्में की हैं और अन्ना (सुनील शेट्टी) ने भी कई फिल्में की हैं। दूसरी वजह यह थी कि कहानी हम सबको पसंद आई। यह फिरोज नाडियाडवाला की फिल्म थी और मैं करीब 11–12 साल बाद उनके साथ काम कर रहा था। इसके अलावा इतने कलाकारों का एक साथ फिल्म में काम करना आजकल कम देखने को मिलता है। इसलिए हम सब उत्साहित थे। सवाल: इतने सालों का रिश्ता और साथ काम करने का अनुभव कैसा रहा? जवाब/सुनील शेट्टी: करीब 16 साल बाद मेरी इस तरह वापसी हुई है और हमारा ट्रैक रिकॉर्ड पहले भी अच्छा रहा है। हमने कोशिश की कि एक अच्छी एंटरटेनिंग फिल्म बनाई जाए और प्रोड्यूसर-डायरेक्टर का साथ दिया जाए। एक सेट पर 30–35 कलाकार हों तो काम आसान नहीं होता। कई बार सबसे मुश्किल काम हंसी रोकना होता था, खासकर जब अर्शद मस्ती शुरू कर देते थे। सवाल: सेट पर माहौल कैसा रहता था? जवाब/अक्षय कुमार: सेट का माहौल मजेदार था। बहुत बड़ा सेट था और अंदर वीआईपी टेंट भी बना हुआ था। वैन से आने-जाने के लिए बग्गियां थीं। कई बार बाहर एक्शन सीन चलता था और अंदर हम लोग मस्ती कर रहे होते थे। जो मजा सेट पर था, वही फिल्म में दिखेगा। सवाल: सेट पर सबसे ज्यादा शरारती कौन था? जवाब/अक्षय कुमार (हंसते हुए): अन्ना बाहर से शांत लगते हैं, लेकिन अंदर ही अंदर सोचते रहते हैं कि किसके साथ मजाक किया जाए। अगर आपने चप्पल बाहर छोड़ दी तो हो सकता है वापस न मिले। कभी सोचेंगे कि कौन सा तार खींचें या कौन सी शरारत करें। प्लानिंग उनकी होती है और काम हमसे करवाते हैं। सवाल: अक्षय सर की ऑन-द-स्पॉट कॉमेडी और इम्प्रोवाइजेशन सेट पर बाकी लोगों को कितना सरप्राइज करती थी? जवाब/सुनील शेट्टी: अक्षय के साथ काम करते हुए कभी पता नहीं चलता कि अगला पल क्या होने वाला है। ये अचानक कुछ भी कर देता है- कभी डायलॉग बदल देगा, कभी नया मजाक जोड़ देगा, कभी शरारत कर देगा। अगर सेट पर सब ठीक रखना है तो अक्षय से 10–15 फीट की दूरी बनाकर रखो। फोन, घड़ी या सामान पास मत रखो, क्योंकि ये कभी भी कुछ कर सकता है। लेकिन यही उसकी खासियत है। उसकी वही एनर्जी और अचानक आने वाली कॉमिक टाइमिंग फिल्म को मजेदार बना देती है। सवाल: इतने सालों बाद भी एनर्जी और उत्साह कैसे बना रहता है? जवाब/सुनील शेट्टी: हमारी कोशिश रहती है कि दर्शकों के लिए काम करें। हर कलाकार की अपनी अलग ऊर्जा होती है। अक्षय जब सीन करता है तो कभी खाली नहीं बैठता, कुछ नया करता रहता है। अरशद वारसी भी अपनी तरफ से नई चीजें जोड़ देता है। कई बार हम लोग अपनी लाइनें भूल जाते थे। जब सबकी ऊर्जा एक साथ आती है, तभी अच्छा काम बनता है। सवाल: फिल्म खत्म होने के बाद सबसे ज्यादा क्या याद रहेगा? जवाब/अक्षय कुमार: सबके साथ काम करना सबसे ज्यादा याद रहेगा। हमारी योजना है कि फिल्म पूरी होने के बाद पूरा स्टारकास्ट साथ बैठकर फिल्म देखे। फिल्म हिट होगी या फ्लॉप, यह बाद की बात है। लेकिन ढाई साल साथ काम करने के बाद बना रिश्ता सबसे खास रहेगा। शायद आगे दोबारा इतने बड़े ग्रुप के साथ काम करने का मौका मिले या न मिले। सवाल: व्यक्तिगत तौर पर सबसे ज्यादा क्या मिस करेंगे? जवाब/अक्षय कुमार: इतने मजेदार लोगों के साथ समय बिताना। हर किसी की अपनी अलग क्वालिटी थी। मुझे कभी लगा ही नहीं कि मैं काम पर जा रहा हूं। ऐसा लगता था जैसे दोस्तों के साथ समय बिता रहा हूं। अहमद का स्वभाव भी अच्छा है। इस पूरे अनुभव को मैं जरूर मिस करूंगा।

Anglo-Saxon die stamp of horned figure found in Kent

A rare 6th-7th century Anglo-Saxon die stamp discovered in Kent, southeast England, is the first of its kind found in England. Its discovery may rewrite the history of metallurgy in England and the origins of iconic artifacts like the Sutton Hoo helmet.

The complete copper alloy die stamp was discovered in 2024 by metal detectorist Stephen Newbury near the village of Lynsted. It depicts an anthropomorphic figure wearing a headdress with horns that curve towards each other terminating in birds’ heads. Beneath the horns are two large triangular ear pieces. The figure is wearing is a bead-bordered belt. The legs are bent at the knees and separated in a pose that suggests leftward movement, maybe walking or dancing. He holds two spears, points upwards, clutched in the right hand and a sword, blade downwards, in a sheath in his left. What looks like a sword-ring is attached to the pommel.

It is a patrix, a die stamp used to make Pressblech foils. Pressblech was a form of die stamping that unlike the typical technique, used a patrix, a positive image with the figures stand out in relief from the background rather than a matrix where they recede. The foil, precious metal like gold or silver for the highest quality pieces, copper for others, was placed over the patrix, protected with a layer of leather or lead or some other thick material that was also soft enough to let the image come through, and then hammered to impress the design onto the metal.

Pressblech foils were used to adorn elite armory like the helmets in the Sutton Hoo ship burial and Staffordshire Hoard. Some of the pressblech foils on the Sutton Hoo and Staffordshire Hoard helmets include a pair of figures that share striking features in common with the Lynsted die stamp. They wear the same horned headdress with bird-head terminals and long triangular ear flaps. They each hold two spears in one hand a sword in the other, although their spears point down and swords point upward. Their legs are bent and posed as if in movement.

These figures are known as “weapon dancers” and may have had some connection to the worship of Odin. They are most commonly found decorating foils, brooches, pendants and, more rarely, dies Denmark, Sweden and England.

Before this discovery, both the Sutton Hoo and Staffordshire Hoard helmets, the only Anglo-Saxon era helmets with pressblech foils found in England, were thought to have been imported, made in Sweden or Denmark. While their foils do not match the Lynsted die, its existence is evidence that in fact such refined examples of high-end metallurgy could have been manufactured in England. Of course, the die itself could have been imported, but the iconography does diverge in a key way from depictions of the horned figure found on Scandinavian artifacts: the spears point upwards, a feature found in English examples of the horned figure.

KCC finds liaison officer and Kent officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme Dr Andrew Richardson said: “This small but remarkable find provides important evidence that helmets like the Sutton Hoo example could have been made in Kent, highlighting the skill and connections of early medieval craftworkers in the county.”

The die stamp has been declared Treasure and will now be assessed by the valuation committee. Once its market value is determined, a local museum will have the opportunity to acquire it for that sum. The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge in Canterbury is hoping to secure it for display close to where it was found.

Curse tablet with rare Greek inscription found in the Netherlands

An unusual lead curse tablet has been discovered in Heerlen, the Netherlands. It measures 9.3 x 4.8cm (3.7 x 1.8 inches) and dates to the second century A.D. Most of the curse tablets found in this part of the Roman Empire were written in Latin, but this inscription is in Greek written in the Egyptian style.

Curse tablets, called defixiones in Latin and katadesmoi in Greek, invoked the aid of underworld deities to “bind” an enemy or rival in business, court, sports or love. The curse would then be hidden in a place deemed to have the best access to the chythonic gods. The Heerlen tablet was discovered in a pit under the town hall square. The inscription was deciphered at the Institute for Papyrology of Heidelberg University using RTI (reflectance transformation imaging) technology, and its text is unusual both in language and in its targets.

What is particularly noteworthy about the tablet is the invocation of various deities and demons in the Egyptian style, composed in ancient Greek, since most curse tablets found in Northern Europe are written in Latin. In addition, the Heerlen curse tablet contains a group of three magical symbols, known as “Characteres”. According to Dr Ast, these were likely used to convey the desired message to the supernatural powers. They are followed by the names of two men and two women, who are referred to as fellow slaves. “The tablet served either as a curse against these four slaves or as a curse in their name against an unnamed person,” according to the Heidelberg papyrologist.

The composition of the group of people on the tablet is also unusual, according to the researcher, because it includes two men with Latin names and two women with Greek names. “It cannot be ruled out that one of the two women was the author of the inscription and had brought the supposed ability to communicate with divine powers through such curses with her from Roman Egypt,” says Dr Julia Lougovaya, Research Associate at the Institute for Papyrology.

When the study of the tablet is complete, the artifact will go on display at the Heerlen Museum.

Mosaic with rare depiction of river god found in Aspendos

Archaeologists have uncovered a mosaic with a rare depiction of a river god in the ancient Greek city of Aspendos, in southern Turkey’s Antalya province. The mosaic dates to the 3rd century A.D. and has a central panel featuring a youthful Eurymedon, personification of the river the city was built on.

The founding legend of Aspendos dates the city back to 1000 B.C. when it was established by Greek colonists from Argos. Whatever the kernel truth in that origin story, by the 5th century B.C., Aspendos was minting its own silver coins and they were widely accepted throughout the Greek world for their reliable quality. Its location on the Eurymedon River just 10 miles from the Mediterranean coast made it an important stop for traders, and the city became wealthy from the trade in salt, olive oil and wood.

Ruled variously by Lydia, Persia, Macedonia and its descendants, Aspendos fell under Roman control in 190 B.C. Today its best-preserved remains date to the Roman imperial period, including the theater which is the best-preserved Roman theater in the world.

The mosaic was discovered in the East Square of Theater Street, the street that connects the theater to Aspendos Acropolis. The surviving mosaic floor is large, an estimated six meters wide and 25 meters long (20 by 82 feet), extending from the East Square to the city walls. About 7.5 meters (25 feet) of its length have been uncovered so far. Archaeologists are continuing to excavate the rest of it.

The figural panel depicts Eurymedon reclining the river, his arm propped on an amphora that has water flowing out of its mouth into the river. He is draped in a robe of vivid moss green, and fish swim in front of his extended leg. He holds a river reed in his right hand, and wears a crown of reeds or grasses. A variety of geometric patterns border the panel, including guilloche, floral scrolls and triangles, squares and peltas. A second large panel consists only of black and white geometric designs.

The structure the mosaic adorns is believed to have been a pool when it was built in the 3rd century. It was later divided into rooms after the building was damaged in an earthquake in 262 A.D.

The find points to a decorated urban area where water carried both practical and symbolic meaning. In a city closely tied to its river, such an image would have been immediately recognizable. […]

The mosaic was made with small stone pieces known as tesserae. The color transitions, balanced proportions, and detailed treatment of the figure suggest skilled craftsmanship.

River gods were familiar figures in Greco-Roman art, but examples in Anatolian mosaics are limited. That makes the Young Eurymedon mosaic especially important for understanding how local geography and civic identity were expressed in Roman-period art.
