5th c. B.C. grave with wrestler coins found in Aspendos

An excavation in the ancient city of Aspendos, Turkey, has uncovered a cist tomb in the Eastern Necropolis dating to between the last quarter of the 5th century B.C. and the 4th century B.C. Grave goods buried inside the tomb include silver staters that depict pairs of wrestlers.

The necropolis was discovered on a street that goes up the hill from the eastern defensive walls of the city towards the 2nd century Roman theater, one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the former Roman Empire. The tomb, constructed by erected flat, smooth stone slabs to form a sarcophagus-like enclosure, contained the skeletal remains of one adult, pottery and the silver coins.

Turkey’s Minister of Culture is promoting the hypothesis that the occupant was involved in sports and may even have been a wrestler himself Aspendos was famous for, but the presence of the coins is not sufficient evidence of a professional sportsman. They were minted from the 5th century B.C. through the first half of the 3rd century B.C. and display wrestlers in 16 different fight positions. The staters attest to the cultural significance of wrestling in Aspendos and were in wide use.

“There will need to be much more analysis before a positive identification of the body as a wrestler can be determined,” Sarah E. Bond, a historian at the University of Iowa who was not involved in the discovery, told Live Science. For example, signs of a broken and healed nose could indicate the person was an athlete.

“Coins alone cannot indicate this was a Classical era Greek wrestler,” Bond said, because “these coins were numerous and used as payment by the entire populace, not by wrestlers alone.”

बॉलीवुड एक्टर सलमान खान ने बाढ़ प्रभावित परिवारों के पुनर्वास के लिए NGO ग्लोबल सिख्स के साथ हाथ मिलाया है। रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, सलमान ने बाढ़ से बेघर हुए लोगों के लिए 500 सेमी-पर्मानेंट घर बनवाने का फैसला लिया है। रणदीप हुड्डा पहले ही राहत कार्य में जुटे हैं, जिसके बाद अब एक्ट्रेस भूमि पेडनेकर भी जरुरत का सामान लेकर प्रभावित इलाकों में पहुंची हैं। सलमान की संस्था बीइंग ह्यूमन इससे पहले भी बाढ़ प्रभावित इलाकों में जरूरतमंदों तक भोजन और राहत सामग्री पहुंचाने में सहयोग कर चुकी है। अब राहत अभियान के दूसरे चरण में प्रभावित परिवारों के स्थायी पुनर्वास पर फोकस किया जा रहा है। अब तक 220 सेमी-पर्मानेंट घर तैयार मिड-डे की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, असम के सबसे अधिक प्रभावित इलाकों में शामिल शिवसागर जिले के नेपाली खुटी गांव में अब तक करीब 220 सेमी-पर्मानेंट घर बनाए जा चुके हैं। ये घर बांस और टिन की छत से तैयार किए जा रहे हैं, जिन्हें बाढ़ प्रभावित क्षेत्रों की परिस्थितियों को ध्यान में रखकर डिजाइन किया गया है। रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, पुनर्वास की योजना पहले से ही NGO के राहत अभियान का हिस्सा थी। हालांकि, जब सलमान खान ने अभिनेता रणदीप हुड्डा को मौके पर राहत कार्य करते देखा, तो उन्होंने इस अभियान से जुड़ने का फैसला किया। एक घर की लागत 35 से 40 हजार रुपए रिपोर्ट में सूत्रों के हवाले से बताया गया है कि रणदीप हुड्डा ने सलमान को ग्लोबल सिख्स के राहत अभियान की जानकारी दी, जिसमें करीब 70 स्वयंसेवक काम कर रहे हैं। इसके बाद संस्था के संस्थापक अमरप्रीत सिंह ने सलमान को बताया कि प्रत्येक सेमी-पर्मानेंट घर बनाने में 35 हजार से 40 हजार रुपए का खर्च आता है। इसके बाद सलमान खान ने संस्था के साथ मिलकर 500 घरों के निर्माण का फैसला लिया। अमरप्रीत सिंह बोले- सलमान ने कहा, 'आप लोग चिंता मत करो' राहत अभियान को लेकर अमरप्रीत सिंह ने मिड-डे से बातचीत में कहा, "सलमान खान ने कुछ दिन पहले हमसे बात की थी और कहा- आप लोग चिंता मत करो। 220 घर तैयार हो चुके हैं और इन्हें प्रभावित परिवारों को सौंपा जा रहा है। हमारी टीम एक दिन में आठ से दस घर बना सकती है।" भूमि पेडनेकर ने पीड़ितों से मिलकर बांटा जरुरत का सामान भारत डिजास्टर रिलीफ फाउंडेशन (BDRF) के साथ मिलकर भूमि पेडनेकर असम के बाढ़ प्रभावित इलाकों में पहुंचीं। वहां उन्होंने बाढ़ से प्रभावित लोगों और उनके परिवारों से मुलाकात की और उनकी परेशानियां सुनीं। भूमि ने जरूरतमंद परिवारों को राहत का सामान भी बांटा और लोगों के साथ समय बिताकर उनका हौसला बढ़ाया। उन्होंने कहा कि इस मुश्किल समय में वह प्रभावित लोगों के साथ खड़ी हैं। रणदीप हुड्डा बोले- मानवता सबसे ऊपर वहीं, अभिनेता रणदीप हुड्डा भी लगातार राहत कार्यों में सक्रिय हैं। उन्होंने मीडिया से बातचीत में कहा कि शिवसागर रेलवे स्टेशन और आसपास के इलाकों में बड़ी संख्या में बाढ़ प्रभावित परिवार शरण लिए हुए हैं। रणदीप ने कहा, “हम पिछले सात दिनों से लगातार प्रभावित लोगों के लिए खाना तैयार कर रहे हैं और उन्हें पहुंचा रहे हैं। मानवता सबसे ऊपर है। मैं कई सालों से ग्लोबल सिख्स के साथ काम कर रहा हूं और उन्होंने जमीनी स्तर पर शानदार काम किया है। मैं सभी लोगों से अपील करूंगा कि वे अपनी क्षमता के अनुसार जरूरतमंदों की मदद करें। जहां भी कोई संकट हो, वहां लोगों की सहायता करना हमारा कर्तव्य है।” बॉलीवुड सेलेब्स ने की मदद की अपील बॉलीवुड सेलेब्स एक बार फिर 2026 में असम में आई भीषण बाढ़ से प्रभावित लोगों की मदद के लिए आगे आए हैं। एक्ट्रेस आलिया भट्ट, भूमि पेडनेकर, सिंगर गुरु रंधावा और एक्ट्रेस राशि खन्ना ने लोगों से बाढ़ पीड़ितों की सहायता करने की अपील की है। आलिया भट्ट ने सोशल मीडिया से लिखा था, इस समय हमारे देश के कई हिस्से भीषण बाढ़ की चपेट में हैं। इनमें असम सबसे अधिक प्रभावित राज्यों में से एक है, जो बेहद कठिन दौर से गुजर रहा है। 60 से अधिक लोगों की जान जा चुकी है। यह हर साल होता है, फिर भी हर बार हम इसके लिए तैयार नहीं होते। असम को इस समय तुरंत मदद की जरूरत है और आने वाले लंबे समय तक पुनर्वास के लिए भी लगातार सहयोग की आवश्यकता होगी। अगर आप सोच रहे हैं कि आप किस तरह मदद कर सकते हैं, तो अगले कुछ दिनों में मैं उन तरीकों को साझा करूंगी जिनके जरिए हम जमीनी स्तर पर काम कर रहे संगठनों के माध्यम से राहत कार्यों में सहयोग कर सकते हैं।

Roman Republic-era shipwreck with hundreds of amphorae found off Sicily

A Roman Republic-era shipwreck carrying approximately 500 amphorae has been discovered off the coast of Sicily. It dates to between the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C.

A report from two spear fishermen led the Carabinieri cultural heritage division and Sicilian heritage officials to the site three nautical miles off the coast of Mazaro del Vallo in western Sicily where divers spotted a field of amphorae at a depth of 46 meters (151 feet). The amphorae are primarily of the Dressel 1A type, large two-handled vessels widely typically used to transport wine in the second and first centuries B.C. They were manufactured in central Italy — Etruria, Lazio and south to Campania — and shipped throughout the Mediterranean trade routes. There are also Lamboglia 2 type from northern Africa, and one Neo-Punic type.

The amphora field is approximately 21 meters (69 feet) long, six meters (19’8″) wide and two meters (6’7″) deep. Divers also located two anchor stocks made of lead and a third lead object that may be part of a lead pipe.

The wreck … was described by Italy’s culture minister, Alessandro Giuli, as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years”.

Giuli said the wreck offered “precious fragments of our history” and provided further evidence of the trade routes and exchanges that made the Mediterranean “a crossroads of civilisations”. […]

Over the coming months, Sicily’s superintendency of the sea is expected to carry out a new phase of scientific documentation and research at the site. Archaeologists will seek to establish more precisely the date of the wreck, the origin and intended destination of its cargo, and the condition of the surviving material, while also drawing up measures to protect what officials have described as a site of exceptional archaeological significance.

Sacred “talking drum” looted by France returned to Ivory Coast

A hundred and ten years after it was looted by French troops, the Djidji Ayokwe, a “talking drum” sacred to the Ébrié (Atchan) people of Ivory Coast has been welcomed home in a ceremony timed to coincide with country’s national independence day, August 7th.

On Friday, it was carried in a military parade through the Yopougon district of Abidjan, before continuing on to the village of Adjame, where it was made.

The black, white and red instrument was transported in a glass-fronted case on a large, decorated float and welcomed by Culture Minister Francoise Remarck, traditional leaders and hundreds of local residents.

A dozen people performed a libation ceremony, pouring a few drops of liquid onto the ground as an offering to their ancestors.

“A nation cannot develop if it doesn’t preserve its memory and promote its heritage,” said Adjame mayor Farikou Soumahoro.

He said he felt “deep emotion and great pride”.

“We want to see the drum with our own eyes so we can truly believe it belongs to us,” 69-year-old villager Jacqueline Akrebie told AFP.

Carved from hard native iroko wood, the Djidji Ayokwe is slit drum 3.3 meters (10’10”) long and weighing 430 kilos (948lb). It is not just a musical instrument, it was a culturally and religiously significant means of communication, hence “talking drum.” It could be heard from great distances, more than 10 miles away, and was used to warm of danger, as a clarion call to battle or to call people to important ceremonial invents. France declared Ivory Coast a French colony in 1893 and dispatched troops inland to establish outposts and French settlers. Native Ivorians were subjected to forced conscription for work in mines, on plantations and to serve in the military. Djidji Ayokwe was used to alert villagers that conscription forces were coming.

When France sent a punitive expedition to quash resistance in 1916, the drum was deliberately confiscated to assert colonial dominance over the Ébrié people. It was sent to France where it was absorbed into the national collection and placed on display at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris which was so overloaded with looted cultural artifacts from France’s colonial conquests that the Djidji Ayokwe was just one of many. It was moved to the Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac Museum in 2006.

The official handover between the Ivory Coast’s Minister of Culture, Françoise Remarck, and France’s Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, took place at the Quai Branly Museum in February. The drum was shipped to Abidjan in March, where it was welcomed by traditional Ebrie leaders and dancers but it was packed in a wooden crate. It was not actually seen in public until it made its grand ceremonial entrance on Friday.

UNESCO played a key role in the negotiations for the drum’s return, and has also put up $100,000 for its preservation and to spread the word about its return. Now that it has had its official welcoming ceremony, it will go on display at the Musée des Civilizations de Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan which has been renovated specifically so it can properly accommodate this great cultural treasure.
